NROTC 2013 students / parents

My recruiter told me the deadline to make the first board was today, so I doubt it.

maxb,

Obviously your recruiter was wrong, since the 1st NROTC recipient has created a new thread.

NROTC is very secretive about their board dates, don't know why, but that is their system. If P-Flying pops in and finds out recruiters are telling dates, they usually request you send them the recruiter's name via a pm.

NROTC first board is over. I got a call about the MRIS scholarship, and I was told I did not make the first board.

my selection status read "No decision has been made on your application." does that mean i didnt make the first board? And is my chance good of making it?

Not sure about the board decisions for NROTC.

DS short for Dear Son
DD short for Dear Daughter

Lol took me a while to catch up on those too.

But yeah guys, first AND second board are over. They actually called me and told me (long story) lol

Honestly, I'm surprised u haven't heard back yet! U have great stats, better than mine actually. I also didn't get pick for the first 2 boards, but I'm still hopeful. It's basically a waiting game...which sucks for us.

But look into NUPOC, it's honestly a better deal if u ask me.

so i got mine in on the second board. A family friend, Admiral Greenert chief of naval operations, would it help if he like "sponsored" me?

SDSU

Ds was just awarded 4 year scholarship to San Diego State. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this NROTC unit. He is very interested in special ops or aviation.

I can't answer your question but Congratulations!

Have him call the unit and ask to sit down with them, plus meet mids.

Dets are like colleges, they have their own personality.

I don't have any personal info on how a mid might get into special ops or aviation, but if the quality of the Unit is a factor, your son will be in good shape. By the time your mid has reached his junior year, he will start to have a better idea about what he wants. Who knows, he might decide he likes Nuc Subs.

The San Diego Constortium is one of the most highly regarded units in the country, and one of the largest. It is a dual-headed Unit, with official offices at both University of San Diego, and at San Diego St. Mids can do Naval Science classes at both, and if I recall, some PT or Lab at either, but mostly at USD, which is really home base.

The two Private Universities in the Consortium tend to fill up completely out of the first one or two of the 12-13 NETC Boards that occur from late Aug/early Sept through March, generally 2 per month, though that is top secret information :)

The composition of the San Diego NROTC Consortium, as it is officially called, was approximately like this two years ago:

SDSU = San Diego State University (Public, 5-8 minute drive from USD)
USD = University of San Diego (Private)
UCSD = University of California at San Diego (Public, 20 minute drive from USD)
Point Loma = Point Loma Nazare University (Private, 15 minute drive from USD)

NROTC San Diego Consortium
Offical Title / # Prog / # SDSU / # USD / # UCSD / # Point Loma
MECEP / 28 / 14 / 11 / 0 / 3
Off. Candidate / 83 / 45 / 33 / 0 / 4
MIDN-Marine / 41 / 21 / 14 / 2 / 2
MIDN-Navy / 124 / 62 / 43 / 6 / 6

TOTAL / 275 / 142 / 102 / 8 / 15

These are approximations working backwards from published data about the Consortium regarding % of each type of student, and approx. # of students at each campus participating in NROTC.

Legend of Titles:
MECEP = Marine Enlisted assigned into NROTC,
Officer Candidate = Navy enlisted assigned into NROTC,
MIDN-N = Navy Option, and
MIDN-M = Marine Option.

These numbers could be really far off today, but the point of putting them here is for you to see it is a VERY complex Consortium composed of a good % of enlisted who applied into the NROTC program, which is really good for an 18 year old right out of High School to be exposed to. I assume the large number of enlisted assigned into NROTC is due to San Diego being the secondary port of the Pacific Fleet. It shold also show you that the Unit at San Diego St. is by far the largest, and today it is probably even larger compared to USD with recent budget tightening and the fact that San Diego St. tuition is $8,500/yr. compared to USD which is about $40,000/yr., and Point Loma Nazarene with is approx. $35,000 tuition/yr.

There are also a few students at Cal St. San Marcos, but I never got any info on how many... suspect under 10.

Thank you so much for the information. This was my first time on this forum and I am amazed at the information available here.

YOu should go into the San Diego NROTC website, and read everything you can find there. It is amazing what is available to learn if you know where to look, and then just spend the time reading.

that's a frequently asked question, not just for NROTC, but college apps, job apps, etc. The answer usually is.. depends on how well the Big Whig actually knows the person. "A family friend" generally is a pretty weak connection. The Big Whig needs to be able to speak to specific things the applicant has done that prove he/she is a can't miss pick. In other words, it gernally works well only if the applicant and Big Whig have worked together on a project that allows Big Whig to make credible and specific comments about the applicant's capabilities and character.

I wouldn't consider having him sponsor you in that case. However, if you want to pick his brain, seek his advice, and maybe get some pointers then I agree with your Mom, re-introduce yourself.
