Curious (not a chance me): If you are awaiting an NROTC scholarship award for the c/o 2020, what schools did you list on your app? DS: SUNY Maritime, Maine Maritime, Old Dominion, The College of the Holy Cross, Rutgers

There have been some 4 year scholarships awarded to amazing candidates with "high end?" college choices. In what order does the board consider the following; school choice/candidate? Thanks to some of the info garnered on this board DS shifted his top choices around due to career goals and affordability. My concern is that DS did not consider the competitiveness of the NROTC scholarship slots at individual schools - particularly the Maritime academies. Wondering if he shot himself in the foot there? Of course he isn't wondering at all - just a nervous mom without a crystal ball

School choice plays no role whatsoever. Schools aren't considered until AFTER a scholarship is awarded. They then go down his list of schools until they hit one with an open slot. Generally, if all slots are taken at his top 5 schools yhen past experience tells me they assign a school. Of course, one can attempt to transfer it to another school if that's an issue. I don't see any of this happen very often.

Kinnem, when my DS communicated with the NROTC officer at Vandy, he said to DS, " well I certainly hope you are applying ED"! DS replied no just reg decision b/c the ED at Vandy was binding therefore eliminating his option of USNA should he receive appointment. His 2nd choice was UNC which did have EA( not binding) and he is accepted. Also accepted into GT( 3rd choice)... We won't know until April 1st about Vandy, and the concern is if he's declined and tries to transfer the scholarship from Vandy to UNC, that it will be too late and all the slots will be full. Same with GT and other two schools. If rejected at USNA( which at the absolute latest could be April 15? What should we do?

Only you can make that decision. Personally I consider UNC to be one of the finest universities in the nation but I'm a bit biased as I live only 30 minutes away. I don't believe they even start addressing transfer requests until April so the worrying may be moot. You can probably confirm this with a few phone calls. You might also try calling UNC NROTC unit to see what their situation looks like and what recommendations they might have.

    3) Penn State 4)Carngie Mellon 5) Duke
Still haven't heard from any schools. Think for my second son I will have him apply for AFROTC instead... heard you can transfer your 4yrs scholarship to a college of choice? NROTC is a little more challenging bec. colleges are ranked 1-5??

I certainly wouldn't make my choice of service depend on which process was easier.... but that's just me.

I would be sure to investigate which branch he wants first, and what job in the military he is interested in after graduation. For my DD, after researching for a couple years, she's Navy all the way.

I know she did not like having to rank the schools, especially since a state school was required to be in the top 3. For us that's university of Missouri, the only NROTC in our state.

Think second son would be happy to serve in Navy or Air Force? But as a mom I like the AFROTC process better:) Also heard NROTC 4yrs scholarship was much harder than AFROTC? Is that true?

Thanks Kinnem... That's what we were thinking too.... That DS should contact NROTC at UNC and sort of feel things out about how fast the slots fill up and the timing of transfer requests. We are in ATL( obviously ecstatic about UNC acceptance since we were not legacies, both my husband and I are UGA grads, and acceptance rate was slim for out of state kids)and visited Vandy but never visited UNC so doing that late Feb when his school has a Mon off. Obviously we are very familiar with GT as we have season tickets to all the football gamesHe is also accepted into UGA, but they don't offer NROTC, only AROTC. As far as USNA, it sure would make things easier if we could hear one way or another in the Feb/Mar time frame but I realize that's out of our control!

My son listed Vanderbilt as his first choice, too. Haven't heard back yet (though he's already been offered an appointment to a service academy), but didn't know if it would be an option since it's so expensive. I guess so! Congrats and good luck to him on getting acceptance. I'm sure he'll hear something soon!

    1) Northeastern, 2) Rutgers, 3) Loyola Chicago, 4) Seattle U, 5) Molloy

If on my application I put that I "would prefer top 2, but would accept any" and now I have no preference and would accept anywhere, would it be a good idea to let them know or does it not matter?

Also, is there anyone that I can call to ask for an update on my application (like my local cadet command)?

    Thanks in advance.

My DS list is 1) U of Idaho, 2) U of New Mexico, 3) The Citadel, 4) U of Arizona, & 5) U of Utah. He has been accepted to his top three picks, now he is just waiting for the second NROTC Board decision. Hopefully we will have that before the end of February, but his goal is USNA, but we will not know that until the middle of April or later.
