    Does anyone know how many applied for and how many out of those were selected for NROTC and NROTC Marine Option? I am trying to decide which to reapply for - I think I would enjoy MO more, but my financial situation really dictates that I need to be on scholarship by sophomore year, and if I have a significantly better chance at Navy option then that's how I'll go...

    Advice: Join the NROTC unit as a college program midshipman -- while reapplying for the 4 year scholarship of your choice/desire. Prove yourself in the unit and you'll also set yourself up for a sideload scholarship. (If you are already a sophomore in standing, however, the 4 year scholarship wouldn't be available to you.)

    I am in the process of applying for College Program right now! Do you know anything more about the sideload?

    My daughter was not selected for a scholarship this spring (she's a hs senior), and the PMS at her college advised her to get about 70% of the scholarship application finished this summer- but don't complete it yet. He said he'd help her tweak it and write the recommendations and she would complete it while at college this fall.

    I'd advise you contact the PMS at your school and ask if this is also what he/she would advise you to do.

    Good luck!

    Professor of military science. It's who is in charge of the Navy/Marine ROTC unit.

    Oh! I think my school calls it Profesor of Naval Science and I've never seen it abbreviated. Thanks!

    You need to be careful about picking a school you could only attend with a scholarship. If you don't get it you will be heading home. Also you could get advance standing but no scholarship.

    I could be wrong about the exact title - either way, it's the dude in charge ;)

    Kinnem can probably tell you all about it. Basically it's a unit endorsed package -- apart from the "outside" package you fill out before you attend school. My son actually reapplied and received the 4 year Marine Option scholarship -- was selected on the early board. He would have also been in consideration for the sideload -- which could have been 3 years.

    Keep moving forward with every option available to you.

    @kinnem can chime in.

    You can apply for a sideload scholarship during the second semester of your freshman year (I think it's still second semester). It too is a national competition. You will be competing against other NROTC midshipmen. Your cadre will "assist" you in completing the application and it will include a "endorsement" (which you will not see) from the PNS, or MOI for Marine Options. Work hard, perform well, volunteer whenever possible, participate!

    MOI - Marine Officer Instructor. In charge of training of all Marines in the unit and also usually conducts the Marine specific Naval Science classes. I've seen Marine Captains and Majors fill this role. The AMOI (assistant) reports to him and is some level of Sergeant. The MOI reports to the PNS.

    PNS - Professor of Naval Science. In charge of the unit. Usually, if not always, a Naval Captain.
