NROTC and Navy Reserve

I've recently been awarded the NROTC scholarship to The Citadel. It was my #1 choice because of their athletic program.

I have heard that the best way to go is by joining the Navy Reserve and going through RTC prior to matriculation week. Is this even possible? If so, can someone shed some light into this? What are the pros/cons?

I would suggest you re-post this on the SMC forum because the posters there have more intimate knowledge of the inner workings at the Citadel. The difference here is this forum is a more broad based ROTC forum, whereas, your question can be viewed both ways, you may still may want to see it from a poster that has the unique Citadel perspective.
