Well, yesterday was quite an emotional day. My DS (RPI) and one of his closest friends (Ohio State) were both awarded their NROTC scholarships at their school's Senior Honors Assembly. ( I posted a few photos in the photo section.)

Both DS and friend were named as part of the "Top 10" as valedictorian supposedly isn't PC anymore.

The Chief gave the kids some great advice telling them that when they are newly minted officers, the best thing they can do is to find the Master Chief in their department/squadron and let them know, "I've got this." ;)

Then after a few days, go back to the Master Chief, and ask them how to do the job correctly. As a former PO2, I thought that advice was priceless.

Damned proud of DS and all that he has accomplished thus far, and where he is heading with his future. I did get a bit misty, but really welled up when two of my colleagues (I teach at the school) gave their retirement speeches. I quickly realized that I am now the "oldest fart" in the building. :yikes:

Those of you whose DS/DD recently received, or will soon receive their awards, I hope that you have had/will have an absolutely joyous event.

My DD was last night. It was a great and joyous event. She was awarded and AFROTC scholarship. Very proud of all her accomplishments so far.....I am sure there will be more!

Congrats to all...just so you know the pride/emotion you feel now is nothing compared to their commissioning. Your chest puffed out this year, but OMG multiply it by 100 when you hear them recite the oath and raise their hand.

Enjoy this next rollercoaster ride.

Please pay it back next year by guiding, directing and sometimes being Debbie Downer to the rising seniors so this site will be here always for candidates and parents. Your voice will matter more than you can ever imagine.
~ Every year something is tweaked for scholarships. I believe this years NROTC scholarship tweak was they had to submit a PFA.

Great advice, Pima.

Thanks.

I've sort of been doing that in my classroom. I have a student who'll be a senior next year, and he is beyond gung-ho about becoming a Marine. I believe he has already sworn in. He's a VERY solid student, and I asked him about whether or not he had thought about the Marine option via NROTC. I shared the website with him, but I don't want to address it any further with him, as I think it is something that he and his family need to think about.

I just wanted to let him know that he had other options.
