Can someone tell me about how school choice comes into play at selection boards. If your first choice is a popular school does that make it harder for you to get the scholarship because you are competing not only nationally but for others specifically that have chosen that school.

Once you are selected by the Board to receive the scholarship, your packet is sent to the person who assigns the schools. If there are openings, you are given your first choice school. No openings, then it goes to your 2nd choice, and so on.

Thats how it was explained to us.

@willysmom - Agree with grevar's post at least as it applies to NROTC. Also, it's my understanding that they try to keep 50% of slots assigned to in state students.

Also, see my reply to your post on my visitor's page. I had to keep it a bit shorter than I would have liked because of limits on the number of characters but I hit on all the key points I wanted to make. Just left out some, perhaps superfluous, description.

Just curious, is Willy applying Navy Option, Marine Option, or Nursing Option?

He is applying to the Navy Option. Has chosen USC as his first and Auburn as his 2nd but we are in Florida. Those SEC schools sure are popular

Another Gamecock

Willysmom,

You will hear from kinnem on this choice...all very good information. If the Naval Academy does not take my DS USC is his No.1 on his NROTC list.

kinnem has some in depth tailgate information on this school. Great stuff, we hope to get down there after soccer season with our DS.

Good luck to your DS. We are out of the Northeast and do not have a public university that offers NROTC hence the OOS choice for No.1.

What are your sons other 3 choices. Our DS has it as: USC, NCSU, PENN ST, BU, and sending in a request for a change to U of Maryland or OU. His application was submitted back in June.

Hi EX. BT. USN
We are in FL and his 5 choices, USC, Auburn, Univ South Florida, Univ of FL, Ole Miss. He loves those SEC schools. USNA is his #1 but he is realistic about the competitiveness and definitely has a plan B and a plan C which he will be happy with as well. Jacksonville is definitely a military town esp. Navy and there are LOTS of students in his senior class and throughout the county applying to the NROTC or USNA so nominations are really tough. He got his stuff in early too in hopes of getting a leg up. He is going to meet up with the ROTC at tailgate time today. Good luck to your DS as well who knows maybe their paths will cross at some time. Have a great weekend:w00t:
