NROTC: Navy and Marine degree majors
The US Navy is looking to create officers who are capable of running shipboard operations. Ships are filled to the gills with engineering problems of all varieties. This is why 85% of the scholarship money goes to Tier 1 majors; those ending with the word "Engineering" at the end - Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, Computer, Aeronautical, and Aerospace. Majoring in the American or European novel will not help you solve a plumbing, hull, or circuit problem that threatens the life of the ship and crew.
The US Marine Corps is creating officers for ground combat leadership roles and will "teach" those that make it through OCS all the skills they will need to be successful in those billets. Being an electrical engineering major will not make you a better platoon commander leading an infantry outfit and the EE skills won't help you be a better rifle shot or rapple out of an Osprey. So the Marine Corps really doesn't care what you take your degree in - English Lit, Art History, or Quantum Mechanics so long as you have a 4 year degree.
