NROTC Marine Option Scholarship Notification

If you didn't get a scholarship, were you notified? I haven't been told anything yet.
DS received TWE Dec 28. He contacted the OIC and was told he was not offered ROTC due to applying for USNA and that those in our area who received ROTC scholarship are already on delayed enlistment. FUBAR.

Receiving Packet of Information?

Has anybody else not received the packet of information that was supposed to come two weeks after notification? I was called on 3 Jan and my portal updated 8 Jan, but I still haven't heard anything.

DD received her packet this past Tuesday.

Frankly, the material was photo-copied and the certificate was ... well, so-so.

With the exception of the certificate it was same exact material that was emailed to her.

I do not know what I expected, but I saw more effort, pomp-circumstance extended to my son when he graduated from MCRD SD.

VMI enclosed their acceptance certificate in a red leather folder - classy touch. I guess I expected similar from the Corps.

That said, we are in austere times and she cares more for the scholarship and pathway to earning the 'Title' than she does the 'wrapper.' The disappointment is on my part as an 'Old Corps' kinda guy.

so you can benchmark other response times here are other items & when received:

- DoDMETS/Concorde letter arrived last week.

- DD also received welcome call from Senior NCO at VMI welcoming her aboard last week.

I hope this info is helpful.

VMI82,
I agree, I hate when I receive an obvious photocopy of anything.

If you are a true Old Corps guy though....I am sure you are 'resourceful enough' to recreate it into a nicer version.

With the right software, it's easily corrected into something worthy of a frame.

Coming from The Corps though, you gotta figure the guy sending them out is not happy about being assigned to the Recruiting Command, and would rather be out somewhere doing 'Real Marine' stuff :)

S/F,
John

Congratulations to your DD once again. Yeah, you would think the Corps could do better. As an in-school scholarship recipient I think all my kid got was a pat on the back! However, don't let the bastards grind you down!

My friends: I went back through my son's paperwork (3 years ago) and he didn't receive anything like a certificate. Just the paperwork, that is it. No certificate at all.

The local recruiting office did present him with the "big check" at his high school award ceremony. Had a Captain and SSGT do the presentation. That was first class.

Most of his certificates and awards in NROTC have been in Navy binders. I am very confident that the USMC will jump in and turn it up a notch by his graduation year.

Its almost as if the Marine Corps waits until you make it through Bulldog and get commissioned. As the saying goes, the title of Marine is "earned, not given"

I'm sure for DS that having the honor to wear the uniform upon commissioning will be acknowledgement enough. As a suggestion though, and I hope none of DS's friends who sometimes follow me here mention this, I plan on arranging to have a flag flown over the capital on the date of his commission and presenting it to him at a later date. These are usually accompanied by an appropriate letter from the Congressman or Senator through which this is arranged. Just a suggestion I thought I'd throw out there for others to consider.

VMI82, As former Marine I was disappointed to hear about the photocopied certificate. I always thought we had the sharpest uniforms and always did things like this first class. My French Fourragère certificate was really nice. I digress... When DS received his AROTC scholarship there was no certificate. I googled one and sent it to our local Postnet ( sorry no commercial endorsement intended, just did not know how else to reference it) and had a certificate made for him to display at his greaduation party. Looked really cool. Just and idea. Congratulations to your DD. :thumb:

sheriff3: any chance you were in the 5th Marines? I was with 1/5 back in the day.

Thanks All

I too remember being treated quasi-human after OCS. (Back when Chesty was a Corporal)

As I reflect on it I am not sure why I was surprised that it'd be anything but a set of copies of photocopies and a 10 cents certificate with an obviously printed signature from CMC :)

And Great ideas about re-forging the certificate into something worthy of the occasion. I think I'll come up with something we can do with our local MCA group since DD is home schooled and no assembly for big check.

And you are all are oh-so right - the Corporal who was sending the packet out was/is a short timer with 3 months left and sounded less than enthused to be on such a glorious POG detail :)

USMCGrunt, I was 2/5 in 1985-86. Camp Margarita.

Cool. I was Bravo Co. 1/5 from 1982 - 83

Fond memories of Camp Margarita. Have you been there lately? I was out there a year ago and couldn't believe how much it had changed.

I was in the Airwing, guess we had the budget for a Real Certificate. They did cost money back before color printers were common place.
