For those that are curious on notification timeline for the early board, here is a track of activity for my DS. Of course, "individual results may vary"...

19 Dec -- DS received phone call from CO and XO of recruiting station. They congratulated him on being selected during the 8th MCD early board. They also told him that paperwork would be arriving "in a couple of weeks."

    Online status remained at:
"Your application is at the Marine Corps District for board selection."

7 Jan -- Online status changed to a very verbose page that reads like this:

The NSTC Selection/Placement Office has received your application.

    Missing Items
All required items have been processed.

    Selection Status
No decision has been made on your application.

<Plus a bunch of demographic data along with school choices>

From what I understand, the basic process for Marine Option applicants is:

    1) Online application submitted
    2) Interviews/PFT/misc forms completed by RS
    3) RS forwards packet to District
    4) District board is held in Nov (early board) and in Feb (regular board) Results are due to MCRC by 1 Dec for Early Board and 1 Mar for Regular Board.
    5) MCRC receives District selection board results. Once MCRC approves results, they are forwarded to NSTC for school placement
    6) Assuming this next step where paperwork arrives, DoDMERB physical requested, etc.

In my son's case, it looks like he was given his heads up call around the beginning of "step 5".

By all admission, this is no official gouge, but more of an informational gauge on what possibly to expect.

Good luck to all the rest of those waiting.

Yep this is pretty much the same general timeline for me the only minor difference was that I didn't find out until Christmas Day. Has anyone been told when we'll know which school we got?

So my son's online status has read exactly what rocatlin has indicated above as of 7 Jan for several weeks now. However, he has not received any phone calls advising him that he was selected. Does this mean he was not selected or did he just not receive a phone call?

For Marine Options (not Navy), I don't believe the "NSTC" status appears until after the board has selected for scholarship and basically has kicked it up to NSTC for school placement. (Again just based on experience and observation of the process).

If your son wasn't selected, I would think his status would still read:
"Your application is at the Marine Corps District for board selection."

Your son could call his RS contact to verify. Some RS communicate differently -- or not much at all (which is a problem).

I would definitely call up the RS as they have known the results of the board for at least a couple of weeks now.

He is applying for Naval ROTC so might that be a difference?

Yes. The NSTC for Navy Option I believe is the board step, whereas for Marine Option it's the recruiting district and there are only 2 boards (Nov & Feb).

I concur with the process outlined by rocatlin and verified it at the MCRC website documentation: http://www.mcrc.marines.mil/UnitHome/OfficerPrograms.aspx

What a difference a few years makes (or every District notifies differently). Four years ago, my DS was called by the NCO that facilitated his work with the OSO in mid-December notifying him of the scholarship. Having served at the pleasure of congress years ago, I would not let him consider the possibility that this was true till we "saw it in writing." In my son's case, his online status changed on December 24 and it also had the school he had been assigned to. His hard copy paperwork with notification, forms, etc was dated Jan 5 but as I remember we didn't get it till Jan 10 or so. He received welcome letters from the University ROTC unit at about the same time.

Definitely waiting to see it in writing.

I think every District definitely communicates differently--even year after year depending upon staff rotation. This is actually my son's second go round. Last year the only communication he received from the RS was an email that basically said "no one was selected from the early board" and to wait on the 2nd board. My son emailed a couple of times for feedback, but no answer came. This time around (new staff) was a lot different. Monthly contact with all officer candidates (PLC as well as potential NROTC). Personal calls from the XO of the RS. I actually got a personal call from the CO of the RS after he interviewed and endorsed my son back in September--an unexpected call that didn't have to happen, but truly contrasted to the previous year of little to no communication.

My son enrolled in school and did the college program path -- and still went ahead and applied for the 4 year scholarship since he was eligible. He would have had the sideload option on the table as a backup. He *should* get assigned to his current unit and school, but again really wanting to see that in writing. He may actually get his school welcome letter hand delivered by the PNS or MOI.

Rocatlin: Great story and example of your DS hanging in there. Glad to see it worked out for him.

District by district, staff by staff - there will be differences.

I note you are a Marine veteran. Semper Fi!

My son's NROTC\MO scholarship is time-lining the same as "rocatlin" with this exception: Verbal notification was Xmas morning (nice). The Netfocus portal changed Jan 7 to The NSTC Selection/Placement Office has received your application, meaning the process moved from the USMC regional selection board to Pensacola for school assignment. Marine Recruiting District 9, had 7 early board MO's with 29 allottments remaining. We are hoping for a Jan 10 hardcopy notification on a similar timeline as USMCGrunt got 4 years ago. We will see. My son would like to move forward with the first school choice (Norwich, acceptance in-hand) and on to the DODMERB. I wish they updated Netfocus portal's school selection and THEN issued the letter, but I bet it is the opposite. Good luck to all.

    It's seems more "real" now...

That's what you are looking for! Fantastic!

For what it is worth, I printed the darn web page as "proof" and a reference. I looked at it today in sending some of my son's details earlier in this thread.

Congratulations "rocatlin." My son just got University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, cross-town to Marquette's NROTC. It was his 2nd choice and only in-state tuition choice.

If I am tracking your posts correctly... congratulations to your DS BPOE! Great news!

For what it is worth, I had a daughter go to Marquette (non- NROTC) but they have a NROTC unit that is well thought of but often not filled as Marquette is a safety school for Notre Dame, etc. In other words, it is a great program but plays second fiddle to some of the other Midwest Catholic schools that people list as options.

UW- Marquette is a great school from what I understand. It may be the least "cross-town" of any school as they are so close to each other.

    Congratulations!

I became great friends with grads of the Marquette program. From what I saw, they had a first rate program and were well prepared for to be Marine officers. They turned out some great officers who are still friends to this day. I also happened to work with and become friends with a former MOI from Marquette. I think the battalion has a great tradition and history and wish you the best of luck! Congrats!
