    Woohoo! :yay:

DS just called and after sucking me into the "The MOI and AMOI just pulled be aside to give me some bad news" thing... went on to inform me that he received a 2.5 year side load Marine Option scholarship!!! I'm so happy for both him and my wallet! Mom is now talking about a Hawaii vacation.

Evidently only 11 sideload MO scholarships were awarded nationwide which puts it at about half the numbers awarded last year at this time. I don't know if money or number of qualified candidates were the limiting factors but I strongly suspect it's the money. DS also informs me 9 of those scholarships were to Navy Option college programmers who decided to switch to Marine Option.

DS is really excited of course as this allows him to attend Mountain Warfare School this summer. Since he is on both the Drill Team and more importantly on the Endurance Competition Team (see Memphis Drill Competition) he'll be able to attend Breakfast Club this spring, so he will get to do it twice prior to OCS. He thinks this is a very good thing to really get locked down on what he'll need for OCS.

DS's hard work on academics, physical fitness, and building up his leadership skills has really paid off. I never saw him work so hard in high school as he has in college and it wasn't just about keeping up but exceeding requirements and achieving goals. Don't know why we couldn't get that into his head in high school!

Someone must be living right, and it ain't me!

    Woohoo! :w00t:

You mean your DS and only one other MO college programmer got the 2.5 yr this round? Being one of two in the entire country must make your son feel even more accomplished!

Well, maybe they were down to just two MO college programmers?

His stats were pretty solid and he met or somewhat exceeded the awardee averages from this time last year so I was pretty hopeful. When I saw the NROTC MO high school scholarships coming out on Dec. 7 I thought he might hear soon. I even thought of calling him and telling him that but decided there was no need to distract him from his studies for final exams. Evidently I didn't need to worry as he cut our conversation short so he could get back to studying. I honestly don't know how he does it or if I should really believe him. I haven't been able to concentrate on anything and have been sending emails, posting to facebook and to here ever since. The wife is going to kill me if I don't get that bathroom cleaned. :rant2:

I'm sure he's proud but he came across in the phone call more as thankful and appreciative. I didn't get all the details from Mom's part of the phone call but it sounded like he managed to maintain his "military bearing" when they gave him the news in the computer lab at the unit. That sounds like him. His Mom said he should have jumped up and down and kissed both the Master Sgt. and the Captain.

Thanks all for your kind words and past moral support with this. And again, Woohoo!

    Congratulations

    Kinnem,

Congratulations to your son and your family! I have read various posts on the SAF about the process you and your family have been going through. Being a former Marine, I think the preserverance our son has shown bids well for him on being a great Marine officer. We wish him luck in his continued pursuits.

Thanks! I'm confident he will be a good officer too and evidently the Marine Corps thinks so as well. Sometimes its tough being a Dad as I see ALL (or now mostly all) his screwups and attribute more to them than I should.

Congratulations to your son. It's great to see his perseverance and work rewarded. I was anticipating good news when I saw the title of the thread and your name. Since you're buying the next round, make mine a double decaf.

Kinnem, Congratulations to your son, you've mentioned before how he's worked hard to get it, so I know he definitely deserved it! :thumb:

    Congrats Kinnem,
That is very great news. Nice change of tag. Sounds like your son has done some impressive things to earn that. Book that Hawaii vacation, you have a little spare change now!

    Congrats and best wishes

Parent Delahanty. Thanks much. I assume you want that double decaf non-alcoholic? I'm going for the double Irish Coffee myself.

Sorry to hear her switch wasn't agreed to. I suspect you're correct about they're not wanting to let go of a Nuke. They have all those special programs in place for a reason, but I do hope her dreams come true. The worse that can happen is they continue to say no, so she should keep trying.

    Kinnem,
So glad to hear your good news! Congratulations to your son! We live in Gamecock country and have probably seen your son running around campus. Enjoy Hawaii :thumb:
