NROTC News

We met with a NROTC unit yesterday on a campus visit yesterday and the recruiting officer indicated the first board selected no more than 40 scholarship winners.

If my portal does not indicate that I have been selected for a scholarship, does that mean that I did not make it during the first board? Or possibly more notifications on first board will come later?

We're in the same boat.

During my interview I was told I was the best applicant he'd spoken with, so it kind of stings to see I may not have made it at the first board.

Don't know why it should. You spoke to someone who saw a very small portion of the applicants. Remember this is a national competition with thousands of applicants. No one person speaks to all of them, or even a large portion of them. The first board selects relatively few applicants. Obviously they are people who stand out on a national level. Even then there is no guarantee these recipient's will make it to the end. There is DoDMERB. Four years of college and NROTC. Summer cruises. Temptations along the way. It's a long road. Be patient. Hang tough. As Yogi Berra once said, "It ain't over 'til it's over." And remember there are alternate paths to a commission. :thumb:

Don't be discouraged; Your file may not have even gone before the board yet. They only looked at something like the first 300 files that were submitted. Just because your file was completed before the deadline for the 1st board, doesn't mean it made the cut for the board. They review them in the order that they were received. Our DD was told that even though her file was completed in August, that it was very likely that it would take 3 boards before they even got to hers.

DS's portal went from the full page of information to nothing other than his social and birthdate. Not sure if I should be worried or not. LOL

Noticed same thing happened to DS's portal page early this week too. No worries. May mean his application is under Board review? His application was complete for review late August.

Congrats to your son grevar. Nice to get first choice school and to have this in his pocket. He's one outstanding kid! :thumb:

PS. I don't envy him the decisions he has to make. I don't think I could handle the stress of it all. Keep him in bubble wrap.

Thanks Kinnem! I agree. Tough choice. I know he is leaning one way but is waiting until after the congressional interviews (Starting next week) to make his final decision.

You've been super helpful to us over the last several months. Can't thank you enough.

What exactly is an ISR and ASR(i believe they said asr?)? I just recently began to hear of this and asked my current NSI for Njrotc, he told me that our previous SNSI who abruptly left over the summer had apparently been able to get applicnts from our unit these each of his years here, is there a way i can try to get our current (who is actually the SNSI from before our last one) to do the same? Or is it too late or what? Just confused by all this.

ISR (Immediate Scholarship Reservation) is a scholarship offered at the local recruiting level before the NROTC Scholarship Board even meets. It is designed to grab the highest caliber applicant before a Top 20 college, or Academy does.

ASR is a diversity scholarship. See this thread: http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=22202

I'm surprised that there hasn't been news on additional boards yet. I would have thought we'd have heard results from a 2nd board by now. I wonder if they are doing fewer boards this year due to the budget cuts?

The first AROTC board, if it occurred on time, didn't happen until late October. The second board isn't even scheduled until early January. Schedule is here: http://goldenknightbattalion.wordpress.com/category/the-scholarship-process/

NROTC usually takes about a month to release the results of a board so I think it's still a little early to hear from a second board, which was probably delayed anyway due to the shutdown.

Oops, I should have specified NROTC. I thought they had about 12 boards, which I figured would mean one every few weeks throughout the selection period.

My sons NROTC recruiter said the boards did meet in October but notifications have been delayed because of the government shutdown and he is hoping they will start coming out in the next two weeks.
He also said there are 12 boards scheduled, 2 are scheduled for November.

And that's for NROTC Navy Option. NROTC Marine option only has 2 boards. 1 in Nov and one in Feb. I only mention this because I'm guessing someone whose screen name is USMAROTC... might be applying for Marine option.

DS Update

The area coordinator for our DS was in touch with our DS just the other day. He just wanted to remind him to hang in there, that the process is a long wait. The coordinator also said that he has not heard anything from the boards. He said more than likely it is because of the Gov shutdown. He went on to say that there may be kids that have made the first board but will not hear the final word until Dec., he said this happened last year. He also said not to rely on any updates on the online app page (again) because of the Gov shut down. They have way too much to catch up on to worry about updating the web site.

In the end April is coming quicker than you think.

It's just a name created based upon my DH's and my sources of commissioning; He went to USMA and I went through ROTC. DD was originally going to apply to USMA, USNA, as well as AROTC and NROTC, but in the end, has only decided to go for the ROTC options.

Well, I have to say that your screen name now makes perfect sense to me! My son was set on being a Marine and although he started his application to USNA, primarily due to parental pressure, he decided not to finish it. He wanted that "normal" college experience and in retrospect it was absolutely the correct decision. Good luck to your DS. :thumb:

Today I received a call and was informed that Pensacola wanted me to interview again within the next 2 days.

My first interviewer said I did extremely well(back in August) and he thought I had a good shot at a scholarship, so why are they asking for another interview? Is the board on the fence about my application?

Has anyone else been requested for a second interview?

I actually just got the same call. I'm going in tomorrow and I'm a little confused.

To be clear these are guesses.
If you applied as a Tier 2 major, they may be asking whether you are willing to switch.
There may be an inconsistency with your original interview form. People sometimes fill them out incorrectly. They may want another person to confirm.
I wouldn't worry about. If they are asking, it is a good thing.
