Is it possible to reapply for an NROTC scholarship if you did not receive one this year? I didn't receive it this year, and my recruiter told me that it is possible to reapply for the scholarship.

Clarification is requested.
Thanks!

Two years ago, DS received a rejection from NROTC one week and a TWE from USNA the next. His recruiter advised him to reapply for the NROTC Scholarship, as you have been advised to do. DS was also pursuing a reapplication to USNA. NROTC told him NOT to join the unit at his college and, in fact, told him specifically that he couldn't join the unit and be an applicant for NROTC Scholarship. NROTC also advised him NOT to join the unit as a college programmer. USNA, on the other hand, advised him that his performance in NROTC in college would be beneficial to his re-ap. Since USNA was his first choice, he went off to college and joined the unit as a college program participant. Loved the unit so much that he dropped his re-ap within a week.

That said, it is TOUGH to get a scholarship through the college program. DS is #1 in his NROTC class and has been every semester since he started. He also has a 3.9 gpa in mechanical engineering. The CO and others in his unit are as frustrated as we are--he is still without a scholarship and is nearing the end of his Sophomore year. Hopefully, the awards ceremony tomorrow will be a joyous occasion for us!

All true. You get different advice depending on the source. Personally, I think if the goal is commissioning you should join the NROTC unit, but there are still many paths to the goal.

I understand your frustration Kat. There are very few scholarships for college programmers these days... and its very competitive. However, it looks like your DS is certainly doing all the right things and has the right kind of major, so I'm hoping for good news for you too. Please let us know.

NROTC Re-app.

I was told just this a.m. that if you decide to go the NROTC College Program option you cannot apply for a NROTC Scholarship your Freshman year - then following that you exceed the 30 semester hour max for NROTC period. Bottom line, you really have to decide how bad you want to re-apply to the USNA while in your first year of college. If you're USNA or die, then roll the dice. If your desire is to be commissioned as an Ensign in the United State Navy and become an unrestricted line officer serving the needs of the Navy, then go the College Program option and try to be recommended for a scholarship by the unit or if not hope to be recommended for advanced standing in the unit.
