My son received and accepted his four year NROTC scholarship in November and passed the Dodmerb in December. He has been accepted to his first choice school where the scholarship was placed. When does the Navy notify the university of the scholarship? We are receiving financial aid information without the scholarship listed. The school says they have to wait for the Navy.

We actually notified my DS's school of the scholarship. We had to estimate how much the scholarship would cover so the school could do other financial aid calculations based on the estimate. I also spoke with them about the procedure if scholarship payment is received after required tuition payment date (which it will be the very first semester). We were initially charged a late fee, but the fee was reversed. The only notification our school received of the scholarship was when payment was received as far as I know. So if the school says they have to wait to hear from the Navy, Unit staff may notify them; perhaps a call to the Unit's secretary is your best bet.

    Congratulations! Exciting times are ahead!

Shoeless: I went back and checked the chronology of my son's paperwork and saw we got the financial aid letter on April 1 with no mention of any NROTC scholarship. What I recall was we called the Financial Aid Office and discussed the process with them. In our case, we didn't even get a late fee - the school was on notice via the NROTC unit and got their payment soon after school started and DS passed his PFT (orientation). In a sense, it was a no-brainer.

In reflecting on this comment from you post, I would offer the following: Your DS isn't the first and won't be the last in this situation. The school is used to dealing with ROTC students and has a process in place. The NROTC unit at the school is also used to dealing with this. It will all work out.

    Congratulations to your DS.
