NROTC Scholarship

I find it difficult to believe that anyone competitive for a scholarship would enter college without a significant amount of AP credit. At the end of his MSI year, my son will have a total of 62 hours - he'll be a junior in credit hours. Because he was awarded a campus-based 4-year, though, he will still have to take 3 more years to graduate.

I suppose you could opt to not take your AP credit, but that's a heck of a gamble to make on the off chance you are awarded a scholarship at the end of freshman year - especially considering AP credit can equal a full year of college or more.

If it were me, I'd take the AP credit, take a full course load as a freshman and do well, make a positive impression on the cadre, and try to secure a 3-year.

Minor point. Not all colleges grant credit for AP courses. Some grant "credit" for completing the course, but do not grant any credit hours. So you still have to do 120 hours, or whatever it is, to graduate; but you don't have to "repeat the course." West Point is very much like this. So is University of South Carolina. :frown:

I understand West Point's policy of course validation, but most public universities give AP credit. According to USC's website, they give credit for any score above a 3. Is that not the case? My son applied there with that impression.

Depends on how you read credit. It's my understanding they allow that you have covered the material. Of course that's second hand from my son so its very unreliable info! I'll have to check with him again tomorrow when he is home on spring break.

My DD's scholarship processor told me that AP coursework does not count towards the 30 unit limit. Only coursework completed at a college or university counts. Courses taken at a JC, for example, while the student was still in HS counts towards the unit maximum.

The curriculum that my DD is taking really can't be done in 4 years. If she doesn't get a 4 year scholarship, she'll try again next year. But, she won't do the college program, else she becomes disqualified from reapplying for the 4 year.

Hi jodie. Makes a lot of sense if you know you're going to be there for 5 years.

There's a lot of good information to digest here. I appreciate everyone's input. Does anyone have any information on the Baccalaureate Degree program?

I have heard the BDCP is currently closed although it does look like a nice option when it is open.
