I am applying for a Navy sideload scholarship this semester and I am wondering how I stand up against those who have gotten them before. I have a 3.45 GPA at Texas A&M in Mechanical Engineering with A's in my technical classes and Naval Science. Also when can I expect to hear back?

For class of 2016 there are 51 3 year sideloads available nationwide. I'd say your GPA is pretty good. How is the rank in the unit? It needs to be near the top. My DS recieved a 2 year side load last year as have other posters on the board. The common denominator seems to be 3.5+ GPA, ranked near top of unit and great recs. If he doesnt get the 3 year there are more 2 years available. Last year they were announced April 23. Good luck!

I think things may be running late this year, in part because you're applying now and not earlier in the semester. I also know someone who is applying for advanced standing now as well. He doesn't expect to hear until August. You may be looking at the same timeframe. I don't know if they go before the same board or if there are different boards. Terp is correct about GPA. SAT scores are also considered, as you know, and I'm sure cadre recs have a lot of bearing. DS got a 2.5 year (Marine Option) last December. If it doesn't come through this time apply again in the fall and if needed again in the spring next school year. Good luck.

This gpa should put the poster in the top 15% of all freshman engineering students at A&M based upon past registrars reports. Good job.

Well THAT ought to impress the board then. :thumb:

A question about NROTC in-college scholarships

I am very familiar with AFROTC ICSP (in college scholarship program) but know NOTHING about how that works for the NROTC students who are in college and are hoping to receive a scholarship. My friend's DS is a Mech ENG major in NROTC at a SR Mil College with a GPA of 3.6 fyi. He is a 1st year.

If someone would be so kind as to give me a quick overview of how the Navy ROTC process goes for selection of in-college scholarships, I'd appreciate it. I know with the AFROTC ICSP, the detachment ranks and send the file of all 200's to HQ. Is this similiar to how the Navy does things or do the cadets actually have to apply? I've tried to self-educate on this site, but I'm a little confused so I would greatly appreciate any insight. Thank you very much in advance.

The midshipmen have to apply. GPA, SAT, PFT/PFA, their history in unit, and PNS/MOI reqs are all part of the package. They even need to include a pic of themselves in uniform. The can apply spring of freshman year, and each semester through spring of sophomore year. The competition in national. There are boards just like for the high school scholarship. Based on stats I've seen in the past awardees stats are comparable to USNA appointees.

Not all midshipmen apply. I know a sophomore in good standing this year who did not apply for the scholarship because his GPA wasn't high enough. I don't know if that was his determination or if there is a certain GPA one must achieve. He is submitting a separate application for Advanced Standing. One must achieve Advanced Standing by rising junior year or you are dropped from the program. Given his leadership roles I think this guy will achieve Advanced Standing. He doesn't expect to hear until just before fall semester starts. I do not know when word comes down on spring scholarship applications but I suppose it could be as late as early August.

Kinnem, thank you. This mom is a single-mom and has some challenges so I'm trying to help her out with this. Can you please define PNS/MOI for me? I really appreciate your response. This is just what I was hoping to provide for her. :thumb: One more thing.....do the in-college NROTC award notifications go out on the portal at the same time as the high school awards? Thank you again.

The portal isn't used for sideload scholarship applications. I think it's actually a paper application, or it may be a separate system. My son heard on his fall application just before the end of the semester is December. He was informed by the cadre, there is nothing an applicant can check to find out the status.

PNS = Professor of Naval Science/Battalion Commander
MOI = Marine Officer Instructor

Excellent information, Kinnem. You have just provided a very anxious mom some great information. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. I know more about the "navy sideload" now than I ever thought I would!

I was wondering if anyone has heard back about the 3 yr Navy side load scholarship? I have talked to my chain of command and they have informed me that it will be very soon. Can anyone tell me how good of a chance I have? I have been submitted for the 3 year scholarship (just completed my freshman year).
My stats: 1st semester
Ohio State NROTC
GPA: 3.84
Major: Biological science (looking to go Navy Medical)
MIDN aptitude rank: 1 out of 21
PFA: 300 ( 105 push, 101 sit, 8:17 run) age: 21 (took three years off school to play Jr. hockey in Canada)
Extracurricular: Intramural football, Sierra Detachment (special warfare Plt)

2-year and 3-year Side Load scholarship as well as Advanced Standing results have been released.
