It is my very uneducated understanding that certain majors receive " extra " STEM points. I thought nursing was one of those majors? Our DD, freshman, nursing major said nursing is not an extra points major! True or False?

No you don't receive an extra point on the OML. It really doesn't matter anyway since nursing majors have their own board

But what about competing for CULP and those sort of things? Nurses compete with everyone?

I am not sure I am being clear and as I say it in head it sounds harsh, but not all majors are the same. I am not trying to be disrespectful to anyone's major. I majored in communications ( not that you could tell from this post) and my husband majored in engineering. I would say, in my opinion, I had an easier major, less math and science. Are nurses, engineers, bio majors competing against communication majors for these schools on an equal level or is some considersation given to STEM majors? Did I get that out finally? :)

When it comes to things like CULP and Summer training opportunities, the cadets major does not come into play officially. The PMS will make recommendations based on the cadet's performance, while GPA may play a part in the battalion OML, my son's PMS always took into consideration the strength of schedule when making his recommendations for things such as CULP. Since GPA is worth less in the national OML I would imagine the PMS evals will carry much more weight in their recommendations.

Admissions to the college is a totally different process and varies with each school. It has nothing to do with ROTC.

You're being totally clear and not disrespectful at all. As a whole, the military agrees with you and that's why STEM majors get the extra points when it comes to the OML. I on the other hand may be the only one that actually disagrees with the concept, and plenty of other new policies from the last 8 years, because what your major is (and GPA for that matter) has very little to do with your ability to LEAD. When the $^*# hits the fan, that's all that is going to matter when it comes to making life and death decisions.

Disclaimer: My daughter is an Army Nurse as well.

Without going into too much detail, the US Government doesn't consider nursing a STEM major.
