So last year I applied for the class of 2015. I was an athlete and basically assured of an appointment that never came. They told me to go to NMII for a semester and I didn't. I went to my state u and ran xc. I recently e-mailed their coach about reapplying and was told to get a release for athletic reasons. So I will do this. Here is my question, I did not fill out any nom stuff and have not even started the app, can I still get an appointment. I feel as though the coach can make this happen. The USMA coach told me he would get the release and "we can make this happen."

If you really want to go to West Point, I would start everything as if you were applying normally; at worst it'll make the coach's job a little easier. However, if you're not an officially recruited athlete then I'm not sure you can count on just word.

Okay, well something clearly didn't go right in the process since your appointment never came.

The goal now is to prevent that from happening again this year.

Are you an officially recruited athlete this year too? Also, I'm not sure how the process works for recruited athletes, but I think it's a little late to apply for most congressional noms. However, I'm sure they find nominations somehow for recruited athletes; either that or the prep school.

Hopefully, this isn't he same coach who 'assured' you of an appointment last year, obviously that didn't work out or you misunderstood what they implied.

If you miss the deadline to apply to your MOC you won't get a NOM from that source. Everyone who gets an offer of appointment needs to be 3Q and have a NOM.

My understanding is unless you are amazing (#1 in the state, etc) or in a $ generating sport, you better get your own nom. Supt noms go to football and basketball players. When my son applied, he had to send the coach (diving) proof he'd asked for noms. My friend whose son was a football recruit for AFA did not even apply for a nom.

How is your academics? Regardless who you are, if you are not academically qualified you are not getting in straight. So, you might have to attend the prep school one year before if you are not academically qualified.

Late application is not a big deal as long as you have a nomination. Since you probabaly missed all Congressional nomination, you have to be good enough to be top 50 as.

§ 4342. Cadets: appointment; numbers, territorial distribution

(d) The Superintendent may nominate for appointment each year 50 persons from the country at large.

So the question becomes if your coach is talking about being appointed this year, are you that good or does your coach has that much pull to get one of 50 Superintdent's nomination?

I was Gatorade Track Athlete of the Year in my state and should have been for Cross-Country as well. So technically, yes I was the"best". I was the Freshman of the Year in our Conference as well. My academics were certainly good enough to get in last year, they told me I was. And, from what I had seen I definitely was, maybe not top pack as I probably would have gotten in, but they were well above minimums in every aspect.

Did you ask the coach why you didn't get in last year? If you were a blue chip recruit, why didn't you get an LOA? Why is it appearing your reapplication is an afterthought?

I know he had told me they thought I would get in outright, and I had come into contact with him pretty late. I would assume that it was after they had done the main recruits. I did have an official visit on May 1, so it was very late.

And what does he say now? If he wants you, he's going to have to work hard to get you...since it's already late.

I have had very little contact with him due to having to get an athletic release from my current university to have any contact. I e-mailed him a few days ago asking him the chances of an appointment telling him I had not applied for nominations or even started the application. He told me he was "going to request the release and we can make this happen!"

Finally heard from the coach at West Point and things look VERY good, just thought I would give an update
