Odds of Cadet getting pilot slot with no flight experience?

very true. i'm figuring that out now in the 4 months i've had my apartment. amazing how often i cook spaghetti or enchiladas. lol. but i think it's also different when you have the choice of what you're making as opposed to what your'e stuck with

Can someone lay out the time frame for what it takes to become a pilot and then what the commitment is after in terms of years?

You go to the academy for four years..

Depending on the flow of the UPT pipeline, you can get to UPT in a few short months or up to a yr later after graduating/commissioning

You will be an AD member on casual status assigned to a base until your report date for UPT.

You do not incur any extra time commitment until your graduate UPT.

UPT is @ 1 yr.

Currently, I believe it is an 8 yr commitment.

So let's now put each piece together.

Commissioned
May 2011

Report to UPT
Mar 2012

Graduate UPT
Feb 2013

Add 8 yrs and you are at 2021.

People tend to think when they enter that if I go to UPT I owe 8 yrs from AFA graduation, when the reality is that is not the truth. You owe 8 yrs from getting your wings which could be closer to 10 yrs.

Plus the AF can change the commitment anytime they choose. I recall back in the early 90's it was 7 for one yr group, 9 for the next and 8 the yr after that. The 9 yr group was not allowed to re-negotiate to 8.

The current commitment for pilots is 10 years. (AFI 36-2107 dated Nov 2009)
