mdn18, also sorry to hear your news. This happened to my DS two years ago. He promptly notified USMMA admissions that he was interested in NMMI (prep school). You must notify them if you are interested in a spot at NMMI, you will NOT be automatically considered. In my son's case, his SAT verbal was 10 points below minimum and at USMMA (unlike other DIV I academies) you must meet the minimums per CFR.
My son did get accepted to SUNY Maritime (across the Sound) and at the very last minute, April 28, was sent a letter of sponsorship to NMMI. He attended, along with about 40 other future classmates, and had a very enriching experience. He is currently a plebe at KP and very satisfied with his situation. Best of luck.

My status just changed from "App on File" to "Hold". Can someone please explain what this means? Thanks a lot!

@Merlin1996

It means you're on the waitlist essentially...

Can you tell us:

1) When your application was completed
2) SAT/Academic profile
3) State

@Jmoney457
1. My application status changed to "App on File" on February 4,2015. Now as of February 18 it is "Hold".
2. SAT: Math 650, Verbal 710.
ACT: Composite 28
3. Maryland

So I understand I am now on a waitlist. Can someone explain what that is in regards to-
-how many people are on it
-is everyone put on it
-Can I find out what position on it I am?
-what determines my position?
-Are say, the first 20 taken from the list?
-is it by state or national?

There's about 400 academically/medically qualified people who aren't selected.

So...Naturally the list will be ~400, ranked in order of academic competitiveness.

I believe it's national.

I'd say the first 40 have a good shot, and more for the New Mexico Military Institute.

MD is a competitive state. So, that's probably why. Your Math SAT score is a little low, verbal however, is exceptional.

Thanks so much! Is there a way I can figureout my ranking for the list or is this more of a confidential thing?

It might be confidential, but I haven't called admissions about it. I have no idea if they would tell you though. From what I heard, being on Hold before the deadline is not necessarily a bad thing. It means that you are qualified to be appointed, but not exceptionally qualified like some of those on the forum with an LOA. Remember, the goal is to get in, it does not matter if you get in off the bat or you have to wait until May. I think they Hold a lot of people who submit before March 1 because they want to receive all the applications from a particular state then evaluate everyone again. It is possible that others who are applying from Maryland have lower stats than you, which in essence bumps you up on both the MD and National lists. If you are in the threshold to get off MD's list (Hypothetically if MD has 10 slots and you are ranked in the top 10 on the list, you get in. If not, you are then relegated to the National list to be appointed by merit. The appointment slots for the National list come from states who do not fill all of their slots (I.e. 10 qualified people apply from CA and they have 9 slots left over, those appointments are given to the top 9 people on the National list.

I am right there with you on the Hold List. My stats are similar to yours:
SAT Math: 650
SAT Verbal (Converted from ACT): 740
Applied in September
Applied out of Northern CA

Hopefully we both make it into the Class of 2019!

After having my application reviewed last week, I've heard back. I'm on hold, like Usnavy2019 and mellin1996. Hopefully all goes well. From what I understand from the comments above, my application needs to "pass through" the next set of reviews, and be ranked highly? Also, what information can I receive via a call to the admissions office?

I can't believe this just happened, I guess it's official then. USMMA '19

First Congratulations on Principal. Please note that while it is "official" you still need to continue to study hard, continue to get good grades, make wise and intelligent decisions and continue to do your best.

Assuming you continue to go forward in a positive manner, welcome to the KP Family.

Once you get your appointment papers, there is a facebook page for both you and your parents to join if you like. Your journey has just begun...Again, welcome to the KP Family.

I don't get why you say presumptuously "Assuming you continue to go forward in a positive manner." I'm not going to go out and take up drugs/alcohol/bad behavior just because I got into a school.

I apologize if you were/are offended. Unfortunately, and if you read this forum, there are some who have accepted their appointments and have in fact gone out and "experimented" with drugs/alcohol/etc and got caught and others who have been arrested are then put into a position of explaining to the academy why they should still be allowed to attend a service academy. I again apologize. Congrats again and best of luck to you as you begin your new and exciting journey at USMMA.

I agree with BuckeyeGuy. It wasn't offensive, he's stating the facts, make good grades and make good choices or you won't walk through Vickery Gate in July.

It is easier to get in than to stay in.

@Usnavy2019 There is no state list. Once an appointment is given a state and the person declines, the appointment goes to the national list.
@Jmoney457 Congrats on your appointment! Hopefully we will all be there with you. If you look up the lawsuit against USMMA a couple of years ago, CAPT Johnson indicates in his deposition that if an applicant declines their appointment before April 1, then the next most qualified applicant from that state is appointed. On or about April 1, appointment vacancies are then awarded to the most qualified applicants on the national list. This is to ensure that USMMA admits the best qualified class it can.
