Once a scholarship has been awarded

by the Board, how long after that will the applicant be notified? And then, how long do they have to accept the scholarship? Depending on the schools the scholarship is awarded to, some school admissions may not yet be known...
In other words, what do you do if you have a scholarship but have no idea if you were admitted to the school?
Of the seven schools my son listed for scholarship consideration, how many schools typically get matched to the scholarship? Is your first choice a long shot, or more likely awarded?
Sorry for the questions, have had little information shared from others.
Thank you!

The questions that can be answered (for AROTC):
1) Generally, a snail mail letter shows up within a week of the board decision.
2) You have 30 days to accept the scholarship.
3) If you have been awarded a scholarship, but have not been accepted yet to a school, accepting the scholarship to that school is a calculated risk you take. They will send you a confirmation letter in April to ask you to confirm your choice or request a transfer. Transfer is not guaranteed and is subject to space available. Accept at your own risk.
4) Based upon replies to last year's boards, typical offers are between 1 and 3 schools. However, there were scholarship winners who did not have a school to choose from at the last board as I remember (all the slots for all schools on the applicants' lists were full). I believe those offers would be fufilled if the applicant can find another school that has scholarship slots that they can get into.

The question that cannot be answered:
1) If your first choice is a long shot, it may or may not be awarded, but most likely not. It is my understanding that units can say no to an applicant, but more likely, if you are a long shot to the school, more than likely better qualified applicants will have gotten all the slots there before your number comes up. Ultimately, we get no definitive answer as to how CC selects which schools you get a scholarship at except to say that they do have limits at each campus.

Thank you so much for your very informative response!
Our current concern this that our son applied Early Decision to his number one school, and we are not sure of the timing of the Board's decision in respect to hearing back from the college. Once you have been notified you have been accepted to the school, you have only two weeks to commit and send in a large check!
As with everything, timing is most critical! Just have had such little information shared that responses on this forum have been most helpful.
Any idea when the CC board will meet? We know he has made the deadline for the first board...

To give you an example....

If I remember, last years January board met the 5th-8th...

My daughters DODMERB status changed online on Feb 28th...

2-3 days later, her school list appeared....#1, 2 and 4 on her list

Official letter was received on Feb 6th from Cadet Command

We then had 30 days to accept scholarship and choose a school...which could later be changed. They then have you "re-commit" before May 1st to lock it all in *if* I remember correctly

Hope that helps :thumb:

Over 7 (!!!) weeks between the board and the earliest indication? Are you sure it's not JAN 28 that the DODMERB status changed?

Here's the other thing...you need to be in contact with the school and Battalion. If you get a scholarship to my Battalion, I'm going to be calling admissions to let them know your paid for. Schools will usually work with you (some of the elite schools won't, but you should be talking to them and know where you stand). Be upfront with the admissions counselors and they will usually help you out. At least that's the way things are done at Clarkson University and the Golden Knight Battalion (shameless plug!!)

do you think there is any chance the results of the Oct board (AROTC) will be available before Nov 10? That date is the deadline for the ED application in my Son's #1 choice school. It would be great to know whether he is getting a scholarship, and if so, to where.....

I know that it may take something like 3 weeks, but I seem to recall that last year, the first board results came out pretty quickly since there was no bag log to clear and no need to wait until the previous board's scholarship awardees declare which school's scholarship they are picking...

Any thoughts?????

There is a possibility it might be done, but even the first board takes a number of weeks for the results to get out.
Last year, I heard I got the scholarship November 2nd from the October Board.

Josh,

when was the october board last year? Was it at the beginning of Oct, middle, or late?

I tried to look for the information and couldn't find it. I wish I could. I THINK it was end of September/Beginning October. Pretty sure it was about a month between getting the DODMERB message and the end of the board. Again, take all that with a grain of salt cause I could be completely off.

This is from an email I received from a lady working at cadet command, Ft Monroe, about when all the boards are...

We could know soon!!!!

11-15 October
4-8 January
1-5 March

this is news to us. Everybody was assuming that the first board was Oct 25-XX, and the deadline for all the paperwork as Oct 18.

2010-2011 scholarship board dates
Posted on August 9, 2010 by goldenknightbattalion
I finally found the dates for the upcoming year posted…here’s what they look like:

Deadline for documents for the first board 18 October, 2010
FIRST HIGH SCHOOL SELECTION BOARD 25 October, 2010
Deadline for documents for the second board 27 December, 2010
SECOND HIGH SCHOOL SELECTION BOARD 4 January, 2011
Final high school selection board deadline for documents 28 February, 2011
FINAL (THIRD) HIGH SCHOOL SELECTION BOARD
Only three boards this year!

When did they change it to Oct 11-15????

if this is the case, when should have all the paperwork been done??? Oct 1??? If this is indeed true, I have the feeling that my son missed the deadline for completion of paperwork???

Now, I am REALLY WORRIED!!!!!

By the way, the first board Oct 11-15 also does not seem to make sense in that there is almost 3 months gap between the first and the second boards......

@educateme, I think you are right about the board meeting on October 25th. I called our person to make sure file was complete and new ACT scores received. She said we were good to go before the first board--Oct. 25th.
