Online Degree at the Citadel

apparently you haven't figured out that graduate students are not required to be cadets and only attend class at night. Maybe just envious we actually HAVE a graduate program.

:yllol:
I can assure you with 100% certainty that graduates of a service academy or VMI would not be envious of these sort of programs. Especially if they involve non-cadets/day/night students and online degrees... No doubt these civilian-type programs may appeal to some potential students and are worthy of a second look from high-schoolers thinking about citadel, A&M, norwich, but I don't think alumni would allow this at West Point, VMI, Annapolis, etc...
Please feel free to ask General Jumper his opinion on the matter when you are at the VMI event in D.C....

I find it humorous that NAS includes VMI with the service academies when most academy graduates would laugh at VMI being included in that group. VMI, like The Citadel, is a state supported military college-no more and no less. The Citadel just happens to have evening programs for residents of the Lowcountry. And I can assure high schoolers reading this forum that The Citadel's rigorous 4 year program and alumni network measures up in every way. Don't let ignorant statements about evening programs affect your decision. Talk with current cadets and graduates of the school and you will find it isn't a factor. Also, be careful about accepting the opinion of someone who has no connection with the school you are thinking of attending.

Alright folks- I don't understand why this is suddenly a hot topic. Let's put this to bed on this or whatever thread you happen to be talking about. Some thoughts for the record for any prospective cadets who are interested:

The Citadel does not mix Cadets and non-Cadets on post. I guess that there are some options for undergraduate nonresident courses to be taken at the Citadel but that does not have anything to do with the Corps of Cadets which encompasses pretty much the entire physical plant of the Citadel. You don't see civilians in class or on campus during the day. At night you will find graduate students on campus but they don't sit in classes with Cadets.

I read the VMI athletics web sites too, and I certainly would have a few issues with allowing 5th year football players who were not also cadets which is something that I would differ with the Citadel administration on. But that really affects NOBODY on this forum. Let it go NAS! This is not the place for alumni jabs at each other. VMI and the Citadel are more alike than any other two schools in the country. I can tell you why I preferred one over the other but I respect the other one and would strongly encourage any young person interested in a military college to check out both as they are both excellent schools with long and honorable traditions.
So in short- KNOCK IT OFF on this and the other two threads.

NAS is a classless jerk whose comments are not worthy of attention or comment. He deliberately makes false and misleading comments then has the nerve to state he is 'highlighting differences". Certainly lowers my opinion of his school and its graduates; or perhaps he is just a young and stupid cadet who hasn't learned any respect or manners.

Bruno, out of respect for the other members of the forum, I'll ignore the ramblings of Bob80q. However, it's humorous elcid1995 doesn't know VMI is categorized with the service academies in nearly all college rankings in the U.S. Again, students deserve to know that while the citadel is ranked amongst "masters colleges in the southern region," VMI is ranked "nationally" with West Point, Annapolis, Air Force and other liberal arts colleges and universities. So to be clear, it's not me making the comparisons, it's US News, Forbes, etc.! Maybe the addition of your online degrees will boost citadel rankings, who knows...
Listen, let's stop bickering about this. These are all fine schools and there are many things that potential cadets should know before they commit to a SMC. I believe the citadel has much more in common with great schools such as A&M, VT, norwich, and NG rather than VMI. These differences may be what draws someone to one school vice another...
On an end note, over the years I have found there is one commonality between VMI cadets and citadel cadets... they typically both applied to VMI.

LOL.
Sorry folks, forgot to mention that Bob80q and ELCID1995, in fact, did NOT apply to VMI because they were Early Accepted into the citadel's Online corps of cadets...:shake:

Bruno lock this post. Its becoming a charade and nothing practical is being gained from this.

ELCID1995, congrats on the 9 month program--hope it was on-campus and not on-line. Also, suggest taking some writing courses in your future. But seriously, do you guys hear yourselves talking about honor and respect... the name-calling is a bit childish don't you think? Let's move on to something more productive... this is not helping future cadets at any school. Suggest shutting down this thread as it seriously upset the gals from the citadel.

This page needs to be shut down.

As a current Citadel cadet helping several people apply to SA's, SMC's, and ROTC scholarships, and for the sake of the preservation of the dignity of 2 renowned colleges, this needs to stop. This is asinine.

^Maybe you should research your hyperlink a little more rather than just googling "Citadel Online." I have no affiliation or link with the Citadel or VMI, so I am just posting as a casual observer who is curious about SMCs. Your link is for a GRADUATE degree. In case you do not know what that means, here is the definition via Webster's dictionary:

"Of, relating to, or engaged in studies beyond the first or bachelor's degree."

Let me break it down for you NAS: A graduate degree as a Master of Arts in Social Science does not pertain to Citadel cadets. They are engaged in an undergraduate program for a bachelor's degree. If the school is offering online graduate degrees, good for them. It means that they are recognized as a learning institution capable or providing two very different dynamics with a sound education. You do not just get to start offering degrees without going through an accreditation process. By the way, do not mock online degrees. Some people, such as my parents, worked extremely hard by moving up in the enlisted ranks for 23 years apiece by earning online bachelor's degrees. They've both gone onto master's degrees at highly respected institutions. You do not know the motivation behind people who attend or enroll in specific schools. For my parents, the reason was both economical and family related.

And honestly, does it really matter who's better? This is a trivial argument that is, at best, highly annoying. At the end of the day, it should be about if the school is a fit for an individual, not which is "better" in the eyes of a biased beholder.

And because I have gotten this far, it is clear NAS is a troll. I would advise against feeding him.
