Hello, I am a parent of a new candidate for class of 2014. We scheduled his overnight visit for April 8-9, because he is on spring break that week. Today we get the letter about the Open House on the 12th! We are driving up from GA, and staying over in a hotel already while he attends the overnighter. Staying longer to attend the open house would mean staying 3 more nights in a hotel AND putting him on a flight so he can get back quicker to get back to school sooner. So I am wondering how crucial is it to attend the open house? Anybody else skip open house and did just fine?

I will defer to others on this but I think if a choice needs to be made the one-on-one overnight will give you more of the academy feel. Eihter way you can't go wrong.

I would agree that the one on one overnight will give your DS a very good feel for the academy with considerably more insight than the full day event. However the open house will allow them to meet some of their potential classmates prior to showing up for INDOC and answer a lot of parent questions too.

One on one visit vs open house

My son did an overnight visit for football, didn't do the open house, and did just fine. If anything, he got a more personal visit. Save your money.

We did both the overnight and the open house. My DS would probably say he got more out of the overnight visit. He felt there was some repetition with the open house. We were very fortunate that we were able to drive up for each, making the open house a day trip. Your son will be fine with just the overnight visit.

Missed the Open House....but....

Our DS missed the Open House but did an overnight and he got plenty out of that. It is more one-on-one. He is a wrestler and we requested he stay with another wrestler. Worked out great because he met several of the team and got a personal tour from the coach. While he was with the midshipmen, the coach met with me and gave me a lot of insight into the acedemy as well as my own tour. It was well worth the time. :thumb:

i never did either an overnight nor did i do the open house. i've done just fine thus far. i believe the count is... 97 days till graduation...? so yeah, not vital. save that extra money for later, you'll find a way to use it i'm sure ;)

Just "piling on" here. The open house is not necessary especially if you have done an overnight. Save that money for parents weekend and acceptance day. They are not to be missed. Lisa, I sent you a pm

Hey you guys are great! Skipping the open house was what I was planning on doing but always wonder in the back of my mind if I would mess my son up some how by doing so. BTW - what does "DS" stand for?

Overnight vs. Open House

We did both but thanks to Amtrak, its an easy haul. That said, I think the overnight was far more useful for my DS and the Open House did more for me! I agree with some of the earlier posts, if you have a choice, stay with the overnight.

Over night vs. Open House

Our son did an over night for football and the open house over the summer. While both was valuable, he got more out of the overnight than the open house. I agree that your son will do fine with just the over night. He will get a good feel for the academy. Save your money.
