DS is having an overnight visit tomorrow. Is it appropriate to bring a thank you of baked goods or snacks for the evening in the barracks? If so, any suggestions?

While I'm sure the Mids would gladly devour them, I would say no such "Thank You" is required and you need not feel compelled to provide one.

DS is going for an overnight as well in a few weeks and we are wondering if he will get a suggested list of what to pack? If not, I am guessing that a shirt and tie and khakis are the suggested dress. Should he pack gym shoes and shorts/t-shirt if they have the opportunity to do any rec sports? A light sleeping bag? Thanks for your insight.

Buckeye,
There has been much discussion on this topic. Use the search feature. Our personal experience was DS flew out to KP alone, wore dress slacks or khakis, shirt and tie. He had an unofficial interview with another prospect and he felt it was more official than they let on. Good call on the workout wear. As far as the sleeping bag goes, someone more recent ( DS is class of 15) might need to chime in. Our DS actually did get bedding but stories were told of those who didn't. My thought is it may very well be a good idea however with new the leadership it may no longer be an issue. Good luck. DS felt that trip was most worthwhile. He asked for the airline to let's as his 18th birthday gift and wanted to go alone. He felt that was the right move for him as it demonstrated his independence. I agreed. The first time I saw campus was Parents Weekend and it was a thrilling weekend.

My DS did his overnight early Dec 2013. Wore dress shirt, dress slacks and sports coat, no tie. Brought PT clothes and street clothes. Wore PT clothes to bed and hung out in street clothes when classes were over. Never did any PT. Brought a sleeping bag but it was not needed.

DS felt like plebes were sizing him up in terms of "fit". I always wondered if the plebe who escorted him (and the others he hung out with in the company) had to provide a report to Admissions.

I will tell you that the overnight was the #1 factor that convinced my DS that the USMMA was the place for him. He did overnights at USNA and USCGA as well and he told me that if he had not done an overnight at KP, he would have pressed forward in another direction.

DS completing his overnight this morning. A quick call from him stated that he is having a great visit and obtaining lots of good information. His most salient observation - that KP has tried to hide nothing from him. The plebe he was paired with is currently on probation for a drinking violation. He had an honest discussion with that plebe and got the full rundown on discipline and rules.

DS wore a collared shirt and khakis. He took PT gear and personal effects. PT clothes were used - but his visit was through a coach and not admissions. No need for a sleeping bag - he was on cot in barracks.

He participated in the classes, met with the Army, Marine and Navy representatives and felt he had full access to anyone to ask any question he wanted to about any subject.

Am looking forward to getting the full download on the ride home. So incredibly grateful that he has a tough decision to make about which Academy best suits him. Like mentioned earlier, this overnight visit will be critical in his decision making process. KP was very impressive for sure.
