Our daughter has been invited to CGA for an overnight on December 3rd. We (her parents) are currently overseas and our daughter is attending boarding school in Tennessee.

When I looked at the schedule, it seems like the events start pretty early in the morning. My question is, has anyone had their son/daughter fly up the night before, and if so, how did you work out the logistics?

Our daughter is used to traveling alone (she has flown back and forth to Africa several times over the last couple of years by herself), but I don't believe she will be able to rent a hotel by herself because she is under 18.

Any suggestions on how we can make this work? Ever since she did AIM, she has been talking about nothing but CGA and we want to get her up there if we can figure it out. Even taking the first available flight the morning of, she would have to change planes twice and wouldn't get there until the end of the day.

    Thank you for the help.

I have put your question out to parents local to the campus and sponsor families. I will get back to you with their suggestions. Also, you may want to contact Admissions, as they may have dealt with this before.

I have already had a request for more details. Please PM me as much as you can, and are comfortable with. Is this Cadet for a Day? If so, that helps us understand timing. Will she arrive at an airport on 2Dec? When will she fly out? Are those details in flux? Admissions can help, and always a good idea. But I will say CGA parents are the best, and always ready to help.

Just an FYI, my daughters have stayed in hotels several times on their own. When I book the hotel, I simply list them as an additional name on the reservation, and pay for the room up front. The hotels have never questioned their age or if they are alone.

OK, the word passed to me is ask for Susan Bibeau at Admissions. And I think other parents are standing by. And Alaska66 has been down this road.

Sorry for reviving an old thread. Took the advice on here and talked to admissions. They were great and now she is able to stay in the barracks (dorms?) on the night of the 2d with one of the softball players.

We thought it would be easy for her to take a train from the Hartford airport, but with her landing time (1625) it looks like the earliest train she can catch wouldn't get her to CGA until after 2200. Worried that it would be pretty inconvenient for her plebe guide to have to deal with a visitor that late.

Does anyone have a better suggestion on transportation from Hartford to CGA? The softball coach said she would get her, but she has to pick up a child from school and can't. Was hoping maybe there was a regular shuttle service or something that runs that route.

I apologize for the ignorance. I have not been to that area before and am unsure of transportation options. Looked into Uber but was worried about the distance.

Thanks again for all the help and suggestions.

Amtrak service from HARTFORD to New London isn't good. No direct train. You have to change in New Haven.

HARTFORD is always the least favorite option for cadet travel. One option I could think of is using Uber but that may be pricey. I'd think around 100.

If you can't switch to Providence (which has much better Amtrak service) I'd suggest using Boston which also has great Amtrak service to New London. Most of the time the cost on Amtrak from Boston to New London is 29.00. You can catch the silver line bus from Logan to South Station about every 15 mins

    Good luck!

Agree PVD TF Green Airport is much better for options to get to CGA. I have traveled there for business via air and Amtrak, used Uber or Super Shuttle (which can be booked and paid for online and also gives Southwest miles).

Ck back with Admissions ASAP. It is unlikely you can/should change to a different flight in such a short time.

Is she flying 2 Dec or 3 Dec? There are sponsor families which will do this type of shuttle. (In some cases there is a shuttle van, but that is usually for cadets and planned well ahead for leave dates.)

She is flying 2 Dec and returning to TN on 4 Dec. I think we are going to go ahead and use Uber. That seems like the best route this late in the game. We should have checked on the trains earlier - lesson learned about the transportation issues. Will definitely remember for future trips up there (hoping of course that there are future trips).

Please check again with Admissions. They can help, and have plenty of experience with this.

After that, believe me when I say, Sponsor Parents come through.

Hi Ishibashi. I am not a sponsor parent but I am a parent of an applicant. I work in Hartford and live about 20 minutes from the Academy. My work day ends at 3:30 so if you do not have any options I am willing to help out with a ride to the Academy tomorrow. I know how difficult it can be to make travel arrangements. I am new to the forum but if I can help out feel free to contact me.

Thank you so much for the offer, I really appreciate it. My daughter has it worked out, so we are good.

I think I was more stressed about it than she was. Not easy being this far away and trusting them to handle all the logistics on their own. She is far more organized and independent than I ever was at that age.
