In about 3 weeks I will be reporting for NROTC at the University of South Carolina. On the packing list it says to bring a flashlight. Any recommendations for a model/brand? I am willing to spend a couple of extra dollars on a good quality light that will last and be very functional. Also if anyone has experience with that unit/NROTC in general, what is that light most likely going to be used for.

My son just commissioned in May from that unit. I don't know how they'll be running orientation this year as they have a new CO and MOI. That said, I doubt you'll be doing any taxing night Land Nav or tactical stuff. I certainly wouldn't overspend on a flashlight. I suppose you might use it at night when running or finding your way around the building after lights out. Just a normal flashlight will do the job. If they wanted a particular type they would have told you.

Good luck. You're joining a fine unit at a terrific school! Enjoy your first stadium cleanup!

What is a stadium cleanup and why does it not sound very enjoyable?

The unit has a permanent setup for football tailgating where they serve food, soft drinks, and beer (for people over 21) for free. They have the Navy/Marine Corp birthday ball in the fall and a dining-in event in the spring, both of which are formal and you'll be wearing your dress blues. It takes money to do these things. The unit raises the money by cleaning up the football stadium at 06:00 the following morning, usually a Sunday. Everyone hates it but they manage to have fun too. You'll be surprised what people leave in a stadium and glad that they issue you rubber gloves for it. On the plus side, DS found a lot of cool stuff worth keeping including very expensive sun glasses.

BTW, a lot of ROTC units do this.

With a capacity of over 80,000, it is the 20th largest college football in the country and usually sells out. Use your imagination..

Small mag lights that you can change the lens on are fine. I had great luck with mag lights as they are durable. I always had a small mag light and leathean tool on my gear my entire career. Red lens are used at night.
