So my parents will be unable to attend plebe-parent weekend. Will I be allowed to have a friend from another college in NYC attend instead?

Oh noooo!!!

I'm so sorry your parents will not be able to attend. And yes your friend can attend. It's formal wear and you are allowed to purchase two spots. Space is limited

It's a nice, family weekend. For us non-military types, it's like a behind-the-scenes tour of what our kids are doing. On Friday, parents can tour the uniform factory, classrooms, meet teachers, see barracks. When you can freely walk anywhere, some of the "mystique" fades away, and the place is less intimidating. Saturday is a day with parades and other cadet events (it changes from year to year). Saturday evening is the banquet, followed by the hop (dance). Cadets are dismissed early Sunday.
I am very glad I attended PPW--my son enjoyed showing us around, introducing us to his friends, etc. Every year, many families do not attend, for one reason or another...it's not the end of the world.

Just curious, candidate2014, have your parents already said they can't attend or are you just assuming? If the distance is too great, I can see that, but saving money for the trip and finding budget flights and accommodations is fairly easy to do. March is quite a ways off...... Maybe one parent could attend?

We did not attend PPW.

For full disclosure, we got a lot more quality time with our Plebe on another weekend in which he was away from West Point for an EC event.

Plebe was happy. Momma was happy. That's all that matters.

Several data points:

- The plebe is going to have to be there anyway, it's not like they can leave for spring break early.

- It's the best/only opportunity to see the cadet's internal world (Barracks, day rooms, central area, etc) until graduation. And maybe not even as much then.

- Only chance to systematically meet your cadet's Professors early on.

- It's also the best chance to see the Dining hall (Behind the scenes, lunch, and banquet), Uniform Factory, IOCT demo, Cow Drowning demo, Arvin gym, etc. You'll have other banquets, but never another lunch as the cadets dine. And the opportunity to be guided through the dining hall when empty, and hear the history & traditions was fantastic.

So for us, the hop/dance was only a very small part of the weekend.

It's not about seeing your plebe, that's A-day weekend, Thanksgiving, Winter leave, and spring break.

It's a chance to see their world for the next 4 years.

Mandatory? No. But highly recommended! Everyone I know of who did not attend regrets it.
