Parents weekend is always over Labor Day weekend. We were able to take dinner and eat outside Arnold Hall on the picnic tables with our cadet on Thursday evening. Full day of activities on Friday, then cadets are released after football game on Saturday. They can also spend the night with you Friday night at your hotel. The have to check back in on Monday at 7 pm.

The other date is Acceptance Day. It is the first week in August. However, you will only be able to see your cadet for about 2 hours that day. It is the culmination of Basic Cadet Training and acceptance into the Cadet Wing. It is a great day to go if you can, and you will be able to take some items to your cadet. If not, you can ship them or wait and take them Parent's Weekend.

Both events are for anyone that wants to come - parents, grandparents, good friends, relatives, siblings.

If you go to www.usafa.edu and select cadets on the right hand side, and then select cadet calendar you will see this year's calendar which will give you a good idea of the happening of events. From that calendar it looks, like Acceptance will be Aug. 4 for the Class of 2013. Classes start Aug. 5.

Here's a link to last year's information page, just to give you an idea of what to expect:

I've already made my reservations for September, and understand that it only gets more expensive the closer you get. I don't have anything that can't be cancelled, but have a couple hotels booked, along with a condo, and hope to check them out when we're out for Orientation in April and make a decision then.

I highly recommend Summit Cove Realty in Keystone if you want to go there Saturday and Sunday nights. A great getaway. We rented a condo at the ski area that was right on the river and then on Sunday we rented a jeep and went up on mountain roads. Nothing steep on the mountain roads but gorgeous scenery. We had done this before at Keystone and loved every minute of it. I can give you the name of the jeep rental man. The aspens were starting to turn gold which was beautiful.

It was a great getaway for our freshman cadet. We stayed in a condo complex called Tenderfoot Lodge. I would highly recommend it. Condo made for sleeping in conditions for cadet, TV lounging, kitchen for simple breakfast, washer and dryer to wash a few things he needed washing, etc. It was very nice and relaxing. Has walking/biking trails all along the river behind the condo and has gas grills if your cadet does not want to get in uniform to go out to eat.

For Thursday and Friday nights, we just stayed at one of the chain hotels right by the South Gate. I would also highly recommend that if as it is convenient to go back and forth to your room. A warning about taking elderly members - some may have trouble with the high altitude and breathing problems. My dad did, and they had to leave early to get to a lower elevation. It doesn't just happen to the elderly only - drink lots of water on your way there and the whole time you are there. I bought a case of water and put it in the car.

I have not officially seen or heard any information posted on "Orientation" in April 2010 that has been mentioned on this USAFA forum.
Please, can someone confirm that this is a "true" event and direct me to where it is posted.
If its true..I need to make plans for this trip.
Appreciate the help and info :)

This is the only place I've found it:

    http://www.academyadmissions.com/#Page/Tours

This is just under the regular tours section (that anyone can go on). If you scroll down to the days it's NOT available, it lists the 3 weeks in April as no available for Appointee Orientations. From reading threads last year, it appears that these usually run Mon-Tue of each of those three weeks, although people frequently get together for an informal dinner/meeting on Sunday night beforehand.

Waiting for the appointment and info too!

There are usually three orientations held during the month of April - it's worth going to particularly if either you or your cadet to be haven't spent much time there. Also catch noon meal formation if you haven't seen one - it was that more than anything else that impressed me that "this was no ordinary college."

Attrition tends to be highest early on for those who did not attend either summer seminar or orientation.

Hm, I plan to try to go to Keystone during Orientation in April instead when I can ski! I'd be interested in the answer too - we plan to fly into Denver so we'll be closer to head there first, then back through Denver to COS. I do know the drive times (according to my husband!) are WAY different on a Sunday night during ski season than at another time!
