Do we need a valid US passport on I day? I have one that expired about 3 years ago but I'm not sure if on I-day it needs to be valid. I don't think it needs to be but just checking

No. if you read carefully, birth certificate or passport.

Ok. I read that part so I knew that. Didn't know if had to be valid. Thanks again

You will want to get a valid passport before you go to the SA. It will be much easier to do now than during your first year. If you don't have it for I day that will be fine, but you will have it incase you need for the following summer.

Ok. Dont you get some sort of military Id that acts as a passport? I thought that is how it worked. Sorry if that sounds stupid and that's not real thing I heard

Military ID is fine for some things, but passport for foreign travel, in this day and age, is the requisite form of ID. There will be times and places, too, you won't want to identify yourself as a member of the American military.

As noted above and in other threads on SAF, official passports are used only in certain situations and come with separate rules.

You may never need a passport while you are at USAFA.

If you want one, or want to renew the one you have - go for it. If you don't - no big deal. You'll have the appropriate opportunities.

Do bring EVERYTHING you are told to bring, and NOTHING else.

Is there any real need for one? Do cadets go overseas many times and are required to have them?

Get one for personal leave overseas (xmas, spring break). Official travel you will be gtg with Mil ID card/orders

You may not end up needing it at USAFA, but the reality is, once you are there, everything is harder to do. Finding the time to renew/get a passport may not be that easy while at USAFA and you will most definitely want it after graduation. In general it is just a good thing to have. My recommendation is go ahead and get it now so you have it when you need it.

No need to bring a passport to I-day. I don't think I even knew what a passport was on I-day. You will eventually get a passport through USAFA.

My DD did bring her Passport with her, though. It was easy ID. Now its within easy reach for when she goes on personal travel outside the country - which she's done twice now.

USAFA will procure a passport for you (official or tourist) if they put you on a trip that requires it (CSLP, JINSA, etc). I went on deployed ops last summer and was able to travel through EUCOM and CENTCOM with just my ID and Orders.

However, any personal travel (summer, christmas, 60 days), requires you to have your own valid tourist passport.
