Pay phone at VMI?

I understand that Rats don't have cell phones in their possession. They are at the mercy of their Dyke or someone in the community to loan a phone for a short call home. For some reason our DS is not receiving, or maybe not accepting the offer of a phone to call his parents. This hard corp attitude may fade as the term progresses and he'll call his parents. We're not concerned, as much as curious. Communication has been upbeat and confident. His text-like emails of 140 characters or less are starting to tick me off. Is there a pay phone on post Rats are allowed to use?

I don't know of any pay phones on Post... maybe I didn't notice them either. I know that Rats can only use their cell phones in the Dykes room with permission and are not to be carrying them around at all so I cant imagine one hanging on a pay phone somewhere on Post.

I asked DS your question .. I expect a reply when he checks his FB messages.

"Even if there was a pay phone a Rat would not be allowed to use it" per DS.

Well, loaded on some guilt and veiled threats and got a promise from my Rat that he'll call home after New Market. "Too busy and having too much fun" This isn't the VMI I'VE been hearing about!!

Phones - In the not-so-Old Corps...

Hi,

Our older son graduated in 2010. During his Rat year, there were pay phones down in the concourse under barracks which they were allowed to use. I scanned around the beautiful new X while at matriculation recently and did not notice a single one. So they must be a thing of the past? Not sure. I sent DS with a small prepaid calling card just in case he ran into difficulty calling by approved cell, but he knew his Dyke from high school days and it's not been a problem. Also I have found that using chat messages while logged on to Facebook seems to get instant response in the evening hours before taps. Just a suggestion. You don't have to be your DS/DD's Facebook "friend" to send/receive messages. It's faster for them to reply and your message pops up while they are checking with their regular college friends, which is harder to ignore. Good luck! Hope you are chatting soon.

Sounds familiar

Hi - this sounds just like our DS - I think it's just the way they are!? We're like so thrilled to receive a short message - cryptic message indeed.... enough! So I can relate - guess we might just have to adjust ?

Yep, I get short messages too and it is rather frustrating to wait with baited breath ALL day and then receive a few lines. I'm certain the girlfriend gets a WHOLE PARAGRAPH! But, as you said, I am thrilled nonetheless with my few short lines!

Our DS is a Third and for the most part, at least at the start, the only contact we had with him as a Rat was on Sundays' following church at St Pats (if I remember correctly)--there is a "Rats Nest" there and he would call from there....I don't think he used his Dykes' phone very much, if at all. Facebook messages a little-until he unfriended me when I gave him the whats for about something LOL ;)

My info is dated as my cadet is a 1st now, but his RAT year there was 1 pay phone - I too provided a prepaid card - his girlfriends' mother at the time provided quarters - I too knew she was getting calls, I got enough. Please remember, the RATS are really busy, or at least i think they are. Their time is fairly "managed" especially this first semester, so even if its a sat or in the evening- they have mandatory things to do. Yes I do believe that all the Dyke's or their uncle Dyke's (roomies of Dyke) allow/permit the RATS to call. Also remember, whether its the Dyke's room or the 1 pay phone, there isnt any real privacy of a heart to heart chat. The 1 pay phone may no longer be there - I can't even tell you where it was, but 3 yrs ago there was still 1 - you can imagine how busy it was! larrys mom

Yeah, I think we're just looking for a single, solitary phone call to cover the basics. "Would it hurt you so bad to call your mother?!". Might as well start now with the nagging! Wish we didn't live ten hours drive away, but am so glad he's at VMI and apparently loving it.
