Physical Conditioning for Beast Barracks

Wow not a single pushup or situp?! What if a girl cannot perform a proper pullup?

If they can't perform a single push up or sit up, I wonder how they even got into USMA...

I think they're a bit more lenient on girls who can't perform a proper pull ups....although I'd try to get at least one.

Don't be the girl that showed up here unable to perform a single full sit up or push up on her diagnostic APFT...really, it happened.

How on earth did she pass the CFA?
I bet she could do plenty of both by the end of Beast.

patentesq;163857 What is the purpose of pre-hydration -- is it just about getting mentally accustomed to drinking a lot of water said:
Yes, cells actually can increase their storage of water. If a person is chronically dehydrated the body adapts to having less water and stores less everywhere...so that what little is available can be used for metabolic processes. It can take many months of enthusiastic hydration to "reset" this (i.e. get the body over the scarcity approach so that water is stored in greater quantities in all the cells).

Similar concept to how chronic dieting can reset the metabolism at a lower rate...the body is perceiving a shortage of calories and is conserving them.

I am a massage therapist and I notice huge differences in clients' tissues depending on their habits. Muscles are much healthier, more pliable and less painful with a lot of water and little caffeine. Also true of ligaments, tendons, skin.

Fellow plebes were talking about her in disgust at A-Day -- she did not make it to the end of Beast.

Females do not have to do pullups for the CFA but even one gets you more points than maxing the hang.

Not surprising that she didn't make it through Beast.
Still wonder how she passed the CFA when the average is 33 push-ups and 68 sit-ups and she couldn't do one of either at Beast?

I'm guessing the tester was a little lenient on how "low" the push-ups were?

She had family that went to WP...take it as you will. Anyway, girls do not need to be able to perform a pull-up. During PT sessions you will help each other do negatives.

what are the average/pass scores on the AFPT? for both genders

Stretch

I cannot emphasize enough -- stretch, stretch, stretch! And start now!

My son had knee trouble during beast and they had him going to some sort of physical therapy during beast. I was a nervous wreck at home thinking he was going to be separated, but he assured me he was in no danger of being sent home. They didn't let him run much so he could pass the CFT at the end of beast as well as complete the march back. He called me from the doctor's office once during beast and said, "They just told me I have the flexibility of an 80 year old." He was given stretches to do and they helped immensely. He hasn't had any troubles since then.

The strange thing is he was an athlete in high school - X-Country and swimming, and we all thought he was in great physical condition. I'll bet my last dollar he never stretched before beast.

we will have to do a diagnostic swim test at some point during beast. If I understand correctly it will be used to place us in cow drowning (swim class during junior year)

If you fail the swim test you will be placed in a swim class during Plebe year.

Is the swim class during Plebe year on top of all the other classes that we have to take or in place of a certain class?

If you are placed in plebe swimming, it is on top of the already-required plebe DPE courses of Combatives/Boxing, Military Movement, and general health/fitness .

Yes, remedial courses will never replace other requirements. This goes for purely academic remedial classes (ie Rock Math will not exclude you from the rest of the required core courses).

What does one need to do in order to pass the swim test? Just swim a certain distance in a certain time? Show proficiency in various strokes? Something else?

A specified distance in a certain amount of time using any stroke(s). I don't remember the exact distance but I think it was 600m (just a guess but I may be off). It wasn't particularly difficult to pass although it was very tiring. Only weak swimmers failed it so you don't have to be an expert by any means.

If you pass the test, what happens? Are there significant swimming activities that cadets are involved in during Beast or at WP at all?
