This isn't a big deal at all, but I was wondering if I will be presented with an award from anybody. My high schools awards night is coming up, and I would also like to possibly have something to display at my grad party.

I know that Air Force ROTC does. Not sure about the other services.

    award presentation

At my sons school, they will be presenting him (and all the kids getting military scholarships) at honors night.
We spoke with both his counsellor at school and the officers at his college.
    They are coordinating from there.

For AROTC, the scholarship office sent son a template of what is said. We were overseas so we presented it to the counselors for honors night. Our school refused to acknowledge ROTC scholarships.... gggrrrrr....so at son's graduation dinner, at the American Club poolside, the Defense attache and his ginormous sidekick..NCO...announced son's accomplishments in a booming voice for all to hear. Huge surprise for son, and the crowd loved it.

If your school won't announce it, figure out another way to shout it to the rooftops!

So, basically from what I have read, the best thing we can do is show the counselors a copy of the scholarship offer that was sent in the mail, and then see what happens regarding what our school does?

WHen my husband was a PMS he went to his 4yr awardees' award ceremonies and presented scholarships. AROTC and keep in mind this was mostly regional. He did travel 5 hours once to award scholarship because he felt like it was a big accomplishment for the student and should be recognized.

It really depends on the ROTC program and their proximity to student. Cadet command (AROTC) generally sends out a list of scholarship awardees to PMSs so that PMS knows who is local to their area.

Our daughters name popped up and two local PMSs who are also friends let us know she was on the list ( recently well after her Dec scholarship awarding)

If you first talk to school and see what their policy is most dont have a problem with award being presented on Honors night( along with other scholarship presentations)

Then contact local ROTC program within your area and request that someone from their program present your student's scholarship Most programs will gladly oblige as it is very good publicity for the military and ROTC programs.

Take care of this as quickly as possible though, as ROTC programs have cadre who travel in the summers to participate at summer camps and some have to leave almost as soon as Spring semester is over.

Good luck and congratulations on your student's scholarship!

My son's high school recognized the ROTC scholarship award students at senior honors night, which turned out to be great fun for my son who received an NROTC scholarship. The Army folks had a young captain present them a small folder, the Air Force folks had a lieutenant colonel do the same. But the Navy regional scholarship coordinators sent two petty officers with giant checks, so the two Navy recipients got the "big check" presentation. We had arranged for the RADM who did my son's scholarship interview to also come and help present the check, so the Navy really stole the show. I just had to share that story...House06's advice is spot on so I have nothing to add but my admiration for a great response ;)

great timing - Recently I asked NROTC about honors night. Following is the email received from NROTC Recruiter

We love to attend honors night to recognize our scholarship winners and would be proud to present NROTC scholarship at his awards night. After all the NROTC Scholarship is very competitive and is more than just money for school. Recipients, our countries future leaders are committed to defend and protect our freedoms. The commitment required is much more than just going to school. All ROTC Scholarship recipients deserve recognition for their commitment to serve our country.

I will just need to check with the school to make sure this is acceptable as some schools in the area do not let us do this and your son is our first award winner from your school. I will make sure to contact them on this issue. Any information you have on honors night would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I know that a member of the cadre at a college close to us that has ROTC will be here the night of my son's scholarship night to give him the award.

There is a form that our guidance department sends out to all of those organizations that consider students for scholarship opportunities. They fill it out, send it back and say whether or not they will be in attendance to present. If they are unable then a member of the school's staff will make the presentation on their behalf.

Check with your guidance department and see if they have any idea.

So, I would like to thank everyone's advice on this thread. I live in Michigan, and I have a 4-year to Arizona State, so I knew I would not be able to have a member of the cadre from ASU come and present me with the award. I did, however, complete my interview with a Major at Notre Dame. I contacted them today, and even though I won't be attending thier school, they told me that they would gladly come to my awards night and present me with the scholarship. They were very helpful and I'm happy I came across this thread, because if I had not, I prolly wouldn't have even thought about contacting them. Thanks everyone!

My son received an oversized check with his name on it presented by the Navy in recognition of his NROTC scholarship at his school's Honors Night last week. Apparently, the Navy coordinated directly with the school. We didn't know they were going to do that but did receive a letter from the school strongly encouraging him to attend as an Honors Award recipient.

You've worked hard and I hope the same thing happens for you too!:thumb:

I decided to email both guidance any the NJROTC instructor to find out if a rep would be at the senior awards night. They both responded that they are coordinating with the Navy to have a representative present to award the kids with their scholarships -- yay! We have grandparents coming from out of town (one grandfather was a Marine and the other was in the Navy), and I know this will mean a lot to them as well as our son.

I made an inquiry with Son's GC this morning and discovered that they typically have military reps present for awards night. But they haven't heard anything from the Army regarding Son. She asked me to put the Army in touch with her.

Thanks to this thread for bringing awards night to my attention. :thumb: Otherwise, Son might have been overlooked on awards night.

    Awards Night

For S #1 the local MALO a Major who lives close came in Class A uniform and made the presentation at the School's Senior awards night. That was cool.

We have been told and coordinated that the USMC Officer Recruiter will drive down from Nashville and present the S#2 Paperwork In Person. This will be very cool because the USMC Uniforms are eye popping.

The school likes to recognize each and every scholarship, and they have the seniors fill out a form and create a grand total, which they put on the Sign in front of the school. Last year it was ~$26 million in scholarships. For a class of about 700 people. It's a very good Public HS and we are grateful for the work they do.
