Pilot Traning Slots?

Want to see seas at their worst while out there in a thimble? Go NOAA!

There. I fixed it for you LITS. :shake: Seriously though....Those guys are pretty amazing.

Actually, I think the misguided child wants to experience the skies at their worst and fly one of the Hurricane Tracker aircraft.

Eh, takes you no time to get out in a plane....on a ship, heading out at....maybe 5 knots, you'll have to ride it out. 40 ft seas look much bigger when you're in them.

And of course, the old "anti-airdale" saying....which my girlfriend's brother heard from his captain before he went off to Naval Flight School....

"There are more planes in the sea than ships in the air."

Anyone out there have any knowledge or experience with/about a person taking the USMMA to NOAA Pilot route?

Wow, now you're getting selective.....

Not only is NOAA tiny, but their aviation wind is microscopic. If you can find anyone with this experience....we're doing very very well on this website.

FYI...

In my AF career so far I've trained 4 "KP's" as AF pilots.

VERY strange to me, an AFA grad; but they're really great folks and hearing their stories about KP has always been very interesting! :thumb:

flieger, do you know how your KP pilots got the chance to get into pilot training? I want to be a pilot, most people say the best place to go is AFA but I find KP more interesting and think I would do better there. Is cross-comissioning done before UPT?

I will ask Captain Rob Bryant...USMMA..oh, probably around 2003 or so. He's a pilot here at the base and he should be able to answer all this! As soon as I reach him, I'll post what he says.

flieger83, you are awesome! Out of overwhelming curiosity, please ask him how many AF spots were available the year he came out. I've heard through a source that there are 3 this year. I believe two of those are filled so far and with being close to graduation, the other should be filled soon

2013Parent, yup. Your crazy kid will fit right in with the rest of KP. :shake: I'll see if I can't find out the answer to your question but it may take a while cause its a complete unknown.

They allowed him to become a pilot...oh my, the air force must have been taking anyone  :shake:

Thanks everyone for looking into this. I am also digging. Left a couple of messages with folks at NOAA yesterday. Have not heard back yet.

Still digging but wanted to post this little known bit of information:

NOAA
GMATS proudly serves as the school for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Officer Corps. Working closely with NOAA Corps personnel, GMATS offers the 13 week NOAA Basic Officer Training Course for newly commissioned ensigns who are entering the Corps. GMATS also provides refresher and specialized training for senior NOAA Corps officers.

is it true that only the AF is taking fighter pilots out of the USAFA now? and if you want to join the air national guard, do you just go about as any other person would...apply for a pilot slot, and go to an interview and hope to get selected??

Community selection (fighters, heavies, helos) is made during UPT, not at the commissioning source. Although it's likely that there are less flying spots right now, which means ROTC/OTC/USMMA people will have less of a chance of getting a slot than the AFA cadet.

On another note, you should be asking yourself if USMMA really is the right choice if you want to fly fighters for the Air Force. In order to commission into any of the Services you need a certain GPA and availability. For instance, I seriously doubt that the Air Force is taking anyone from USMMA because they are already cutting AFROTC scholarships, canceled OTC for this year, and are reducing the number of AFA cadets for '15.

It's really going to suck if you want to be in the Air Force but are stuck studying the maritime industry.
