This week the Plebes are taking placement exams. If a plebe does not have a calculator with them, are they forced to go ahead and take the test without a calculator, or are there calculators that they can use? They were supposed to bring them, but through a miscommunication with my husband, our son's ended up in a care package instead.

Thanks!

I can't imagine that they'd make someone take the test without providing a calculator; after all, some plebes may not be able to afford one. However, they probably don't have 1100+ calculators, which is why they want plebes to bring their own. Also, unless things have changed (which they might well have since my day:smile:), validation tests aren't taken the first week of PS. So your care package should arrive in plenty of time.

Last year, at least according to FB photos, plebes were taking placement exams during the first week, so it is different than when we were plebes, usna1985.

However, concur with the sentiment that placing a plebe in his proper section of math, physics, or chemistry is important to USNA. I think it's fair to trust the process, navyparent1.

We just dropped off our plebe Thursday, and we were told at the parent briefing that tests would be taken the first few days. Nothing told him to bring a calculator. His CABS exams forbade using a calculator, whatever that may mean. If they expected candidates to bring their own calcs, they did a lousy job of communicating it. But I suspect that they don't expect you to bring one.

Page 10 of the "Important Information" book has a checklist that states to bring a calculator. I'm sure they will provide one though for those that don't have one.

scientific calculator

my daughter received several emails during the mont,hs of may and june. one of them indicated that she sould bring her scientific calculator on i-day.

Hmm . . . probably makes sense to do it the new way. We were so exhausted and so happy to be sitting in the A/C (in the days when Bancroft had none) that many of us simply fell asleep for the two hours.

Placement Tests

Just an FYI on when they start taking the placement tests--first letter from our DS said that the chemistry and writing tests were administered Friday or Saturday after I-day (he couldn't remember which day---apparently the days are already all flowing together!).

I wouldn't be surprised if they jiggered the schedule so the exams would take place during this extreme heat.
