I am a ROTC scholarship hopeful. If I get the scholarship, and I do 4 years of school can I choose between competing for active duty or NG/reserves or am I already locked into to having to compete for active duty?
I have not made my mind up between NG or active in that case.
But, say I do not get the scholarship, and I enlist in NG college first program. How does that work? In this case I would rather do NG as a part-time along with my other career?
In already know that you are locked in for those first two years in the program, but then once you "sign" in ROTC you get the other two years through a possible GRFD scholarship?

There are many different paths. You could wait two years before you contract. You could also contract at the beginning of your sophomore year. You won't have to make a decision about active vs guard/reserves until the beginning of your senior year, unless you take a GRFD scholarship or join the National Guard in a state where there are some restrictions. You could also do all 4 year in a non scholarship status. That would leave the most options on the table.

Although the discussion group is a good place to start gathering information, until you sit down with the enrollment officer at the Battalion/school you plan to attend it's going to be tough to know all the options.
