So just this morning I was given an offer to attend NAPS. I haven't accepted yet because I am still waiting on my USMA decision. I am delighted with this opportunity but I honestly have no idea how Prep schools work. All I know is that candidates who are lacking academically get sent here to prepare for the next class.

But upon graduation from the Preparatory schools does the candidates automatically get appointed to their respective Academies? Please input any information regarding the general idea of how a Prep school works, and what happens upon graduation.

gokings posted some great links. Highly recommend you review those and cruise the prep forum, look at the NAPS website and Facebook pages then come back and ask specific questions. Bottom line... If USNA is where you want to be, you have a golden ticket. It's an extra year, but a year that is worth it because you will be better prepared in maturity, academics and knowledge.

I can tell you how it works at USAFA Prep:

1. You do not apply again.
2. You do not take the SAT/ACT again
3. You must apply to all nomination sources available to you
4. You have to do decently in your academics, PT and military grades.

In term of classes, you take English, Chem and 2 Math classes. A few students get picked for Calc and Phys instead of the math classes. My DD has good enough grades at the moment that she will not have to take the classes at the academy.

Honestly, it's really up to you to lose admission to the academy. At the USAFA Prep, they started out with 232 cadets. They are now down to 201. Half of those left either during or right after basic because they decided that the military life wasn't for them. Most of others left for honor violations. As long as you do your work, you will be all right.

You will also have great opportunities. My daughter was Academic Officer in her first semester and Standard Eval in her second. She was picked with 14 other cadets to have lunch with BGen Williams. She goes to elementary schools to do 'magic' shows aka Chem experiments. Some cadets were picked to fly. There visited shelters and saw how service animals were trained. They learn military terms, parades. Your life at the academy will be so much easier during plebe year.

Yes you must apply to all nominating sources, but you do not need to win one of those nominations, because if you do not win one the SA will find one for you.

@O__o after reading many of your posts, IMHO NAPS would be a great option for you to jump on.

Very true but from what my DD said almost all the preppies got the nominations. The ones who didn't are from districts where the MOC simply refuse to give nominations to preppies.

Thank you all for great inputs and congratulations to all those who were appointed to the USNA class of 2020!!

People who were offered the prep route/foundations or who have attended USMAPS/NAPS: did you receive a TWE first?

My daughter attended NAPS and it is the best opportunity!! She is a Plebe this year and her and her fellow Napsters had a real leg up on all the direct entries. Be ready though. NAPS is extremely demanded. It was more so than Plebe Summer in some respects. Basically they are really testing you physically, emotionally and academically to make sure you deserve a spot at USNA. You do take the SATs several times while there and you do have to pass PT tests. If you make it to the end of the year and you pass your classes and your PT there is no reason you would not continue onto USNA. You will do a lot of running and strenuous exercise so if you are not following some type of exercise routine geared toward military training that would be a great idea. Also..it's pretty much a one strike and you're out kinda place when it comes to any type of bad behavior at all so just be aware. I saw some decent recruits get booted for extremely stupid decisions and the heartbreak they and their families endured was horrible. Be smart and be strong and you will be calling yourself a Plebe before you know it!
