Please Someone Give Me feed back

Thanks Screaming Eagle --- he is soooooooo correct. If you are a runner that is great. Really great - you will need to run!

I was simply trying to emphasize how important athletics is to USMA (and all the service academies) - they definitely do not have and do not want a "cookie-cutter" Corps.

Relax and emphasize the strong parts of your package.

I don't know where swimming ranks on the list or how many points you'd receive, but I met the swim coach this summer. He was speaking with a candidate for the class of 2012 and had a very encouraging tone. You may want to reach out to him and also let your MALO know that you'd be interested in the swim team. You want to make sure that the NCAA rules are not being violated - even by accident.

Does anyone know how much stock WP puts on NHS officer position? I am currently running for treasurer and secretary.

Armydude, your NHS officer "check-mark" will count the same as any club officer position -- the NHS part is what looks good. BUT, go get that Eagle Scout rank before you're 18 and can't do it. You will never regret it and it will be greater "stock" than being the treasurer of your local National Honor Society chapter.

Look at it this way -- you just got into the NHS -- but you started toward your Eagle Scout long ago -- maybe when you were 8 or 9 years old if you were in Cub Scouts.

Attaining the Eagle rank says to others that you finish what you started, and you follow through until you achieve your goal.

Good luck!

Thanks for your feed back! I almost have my eagle just need to finish the paperwork. also can someone respond to the post i have on the Citadel thread!!
GO ARMY

Armydude:

None of us are admissions officers - we don't know the whole story about you or the competition you are facing in your nomination pool or what your priorities are.

That being said - I would say from my own experience and talking with Admissions officers that your Math SAT score is probably too low for a direct appointment. What that means is - if admissions deems you a good fit and is interested in your package - you would probably be a prep school candidate.
Since you would have to take Calculus and Physics at West Point (regardless of your major) - admissions needs to know you will have the potential to do that. Have/are you taken/taking Calculus or Pre-Calculus in High school?

I have no idea how you would compete for admissions to the Citadel. But, let's say you get accepted. You need to decide how much you want USMA - would you pick prep school and another year of school over the Citadel?

I am taking pre-calc now and physics andhave already taken chem. I recieved an A in chem and I am carrying an A in precalc and an A- in physics as of today.

Oh and I would take the prep school or a AOG scholarship.

Armydude - I just went back and read this whole thread -

You got a 29 on your ACT? That is much better than your SAT scores. It converts to about a 1280.
I don't know what your Math/English breakdown is but you may want to take the ACT again.

I was the SPL, not any more. Do I have to update that, or does it refer to being one for one term? And now I am the VP of NHS for our school, but there is no spot to mark that... I also picked up Newspaper this year, and I am Co-editor-in-cheif, can I take credit for being editor? or does West Point only want to know if I was Editor-in-cheif, as the two of us split the responsibility? When I started looking at West Point, my Candidate Questionaire was meager, so I decided to pick up a few activities and now I need to update them, but I've only been in them for a few months/weeks. Does West Point see it as a check list or consider how involved you were? Because I also am in Model OAS (and plan to join Model UN), but the conference will not be held until after November 5th, which is the deadline for me (LOA recipient).

I was in Track, ran the half-mile. I joined to pick-up a sport and get in shape, not becuase I could run, and I did manage to letter in it. I plan to join track again this year, but I need to pick up a winter sport too, to keep active and in shape, any suggestions?

You can easily update your file at WP (or any other SA) by sending an updated "resume". My D updated her file several times to all SA's and her MOC. Since you have an LOA, you don't really need to send updates to WP (though my D kept sending it just to be sure they had it). The big focus for you at this point is ensuring you get a nom. Without a nom your LOA could become problematic. So, be certain your MOC is updated. Your MOC is aware that you have an LOA.

Hint for those with LOA's: don't get cocky to your MOC staffer or nominating committee (it happens). Your MOC is not required to give anyone a nom if they doesn't want to. Also, although the MOC staffer may know you have an LOA, some do not tell the nominating committee. Put your absolute best foot forward and be respectful to everyone (it is not uncommon for LOA recipients to somehow feel entitled to a nom). There are instances where cocky takes over. Getting an LOA is great - but it does not entitle you to anything (that is not directed at you so much as anyone reading the post).

Back to your question - I suggest you update your file at all SA's and your MOC. Put the co-editor-in-chief on your resume and see what WP does with it. I suggest drawing attention to the new items. For instance, use a bold font and annotate that updates are in "bold" or whatever. The resume should be succinct and include a nice short cover letter. The SA's & MOC staff are very busy this time of year - make it easy for them to pick you!

And if you're looking for a winter sport, try swimming. It will keep you cross-trained for track in the spring and will help you in the dreaded Plebe Drowning class.

Survival Swimming is now a Cow year class, but yeah swimming in the winter would be a good way to stay in shape because it's hard to get out and run because its so COLD!

Hello all. Just working on my USMA App. I got accepted to the Citadel, John Carroll, and will be hearing from Marquette soon. For USMA I turned in the counselor recomendation form, have all the teacher recomendation forms in and am working on the personal statement ( having my AP english teacher look at them)among numerous other things. I don't think it will be possible for me to get my eagle scout before I turn my app. ,because my six months of leadership won't be up. Will this affect me? Just preparing for the CFA. Been dropping weight since football. OH I also forgot to mention I got Congressman Kucinichs Nom. and have an interview with Sen. Browns Academy board dec. 8. I am alittle bit worried that I didn't get an LOA. I am worried about getting academically qualified because of Test Scores. My GPA is good right know If all goes well I will get above a 4.0GPA. Also was wondering If I should have a family friend write a recomendation for me. He really understands my dream and is a 1993 grad. Going to the USMA is all I have ever wanted! Besides becoming an officer in the Army.

Maybe your essay can mention that you will complete eagle as soon as you finish your last requirement? I am assuming you have already completed your project and the write up? If all you lack is time in your position and your Eagle Board, you should mention that somewhere in your application. If no where else, write a letter explaining and attach. However, if it is doubtful that you will finish, you need to be honest about it. Do you see now why your parents were after you to finish this earlier?? I am trying to get son #3 to finish before 14, when all the distractions start!

congrats to your son. i hope I see him on R-Day. Oh don't worry I will finish my eagle.

Son has senator nom+LOA to USMA (he is a recruited athlete, which helped secure the LOA). He has the appointment (came after T'giving). He has congressional nom+LOA to USNA, where I don't think they consider him blue chip, as they do at USMA. I say this because the USMA LOA mentions athletics, where the USNA one does not.

what sport? I didn't get an LOA and am getting alittle ancy. Oh and I have all merit badges done and project along with write up.

Armydude2012 -

Do NOT worry about the LOA - the vast majority of appointees do NOT get an LOA. The appointment process will start in earnest after Christmas and will continue into the spring.

You can and you should continue to update your file as you move through your senior year until you hear from USMA. On the candidate login there is a section where you can send a message to admissions.

Congratulations on your nomination! Don't be afraid to take your SATs and/or ACTs again. You can take them in January - for the final time for this admission season.
Keep working hard and hang tough!
