Plebe Candidate Status revisited?

It WAS only the plebes screw up... they are the ONLY class who hasn't done a single successful spirit mission to honor anything. Nothing for 9-11, nothing for Coast Guard and now this BS. All the while they are getting privileges that NO class has had before them and the training department is having their hand tied behind there backs mostly due to pressure from PARENTS. They are told exactly what is expected of them, everything they are doing is a TEST. They are supposed to be learning leadership starting by learning how to lead each other. Not only are they unwilling to do this, but they are very quick to pass the blame to someone else. Meanwhile every other class has been able to achieve this. It is for this reason why we are so proud and why upper class get angry when they see how this class acts. 2013Parent, I believe you deserve answers, but I believe you called the wrong person. Instead you should be asking the members of the class of 2013.

sadly enough, i agree. it seems like theres maybe 10-15 people who actually give a da*n and show up for the spirit mission, meetings, etc, and maybe an additional 30 that show up occasionally. other than that, pretty much no one ever shows up. the 9-11 "ceremony" was the highest attendance weve had yet, and while it was nice if you were there at midnight, NOBODY ELSE WAS. there was no "longevity" to the memorial for anyone to see. its frusterating as hell trying to get a bunch of people to go do something that they dont want or "have the time" to do, and im really at a loss as to how to go about it. Is2day4him, im going to disagree with your "volunteer" comment, because when im in charge of getting a group of people together for a spirit mission but dont have the authority other than my own "inspiring words" to make it madatory, then whatever party i raise is indeed comprised of volunteers, or at least people who didnt tell me, sometimes literally, to go **** myself.

wac...
just wait, the volunteer comment will make more sense as you see more of this place.
it's just sad to see this school's lifeblood getting drained so quickly.
this is supposed to be a time of frustration, exhaustion, menial tasks, and other nonsense for the plebes, cause guess what? by trying to sugar coat it, you're only asking for a rude awakening out at sea. you'll have long hours, little rest, clock changes, etc... and no one gives a rip if you're tired or don't want to help out. you either help or you're gone.

tis sad...

What a shame they aren't more motivated. Spirit missions shouldn't be viewed as a chore. They are a chance to let off steam and have some fun. We still chuckle about the one DD helped pull off last year.:shake:

Sorry, in any military organization, voluntary IS volun-told.

the 9-11 "ceremony" was the highest attendance weve had yet, and while it was nice if you were there at midnight, NOBODY ELSE WAS.

..........and the only reason plebes even showed up to that, is because an unnamed upperclassman with a connection with 9/11 was ashamed that nothing was being done, so he had the MOD make an announcement for the plebes to start working in Ackerman. They wouldn't have done anything for 9-11 if they hadn't been forced. And even after they were forced it was pitiful.

Again, My view is this; If the class of 2013 is a bunch of screw ups and not fit to be there, then fix the problems or run their butts out of there! My DS included.

My focus here is singular. It is about the USMMA class of 1944 being respected and shown respect....... Period

I have ZERO tolerance for anytihing related to honoring our WWII Heroes being fouled up. Zero. If I have to explain it to you, then you would not understand.

Start another thread about the shortcomings of the class of 2013. This thread is about what happened as the USMMA, in 2009, was attempting to honor the class of 1944 and their fallen classmates.

I will not make a new topic becuase I believe the two topics are related. You want to know why the ceremony was fouled? Well, you got your answer and now it seems like you don't like it.

Also, the training dept can not do either one of your wonderful suggestions because of the influence of higher forces, administration and parents for example. So when an RTO or CTO is left with no power, 2013 has no motivation to listen or fix the problem. And with no power, a CTO cannot "correct" the problem like it would have been done before. Since you seem to enjoy calling the school and getting involved, perhaps you should call and demand that the plebe get IT'd as punishments and go back to short hair like previous years...these two things taught everyone else here valuable lessons, why should 2013 be different? They clearly aren't proving any of us wrong about their demeanor and motivation.

Nope, did not enjoy calling the instituition. Yep, I got my answer, and I do like it. Unfortunately, it is not the one you erroneously keep talking about. But, as someone else said, it will all be clear to you soon.

It is great, that at your age, you know everything about everything and have it all figured out. You seem very angry and immature. I personally wish you a strong finish as the Trimester winds down and inner peace with your frustrations.

2013parent. If you have been on these forums and read the previous thread i just have to ask why you would even call the school?

Peraps the CTO's need more power and 2013 needs more consequences. I am sure that leaders in 2013 will emerge, they always do.

Agree wholeheartedly, MG !

I have LONG been a proponent of more latitude/consequences with the CTOs -- Parents, in less than 2 years, your little kiddies will be on very large ships with very heavy things. They will need to be very knowledgeable and comfortable with what their physical limits are, and how to use the safety equipment. They will have to endure plenty of hot, heavy, enduring work.

I have also long been a proponent of and even MORE pronounced role for the CAOs (Academic Officers). They should have a more active role in capturing mids BEFORE they are on academic probation, and enforcing/advising study times/methods. Some enlightened CCs have actually done this, but my hope is that such a good approach be take regiment-wide, and not just on a company-by-company basis.

Ok I have my biases as we all do. However all of our kids knew what they were getting into by THEIR (hopefully) decision to attend USMMA. In my mind it is and should be a military academy with a focus on the Merchant Marine. The regimental experience will benefit them no matter what career track they take.

Go class of 2013. Do whatever tasks are set before you. Do them to the best of all you abiliies and prove to the administration, the older midshipmen and the parents that you all have the stomach to do what it takes.

Here! Here! Mindy G and Zonker!

lgottliebdds; I agree with five of your six sentences.

Unfortunately KP is not a military academy. It is a Service Academy with a Regimental component. And, that is where a great deal of opportunity for misunderstanding seems to occur. Especially as the student body continues to wrestle with a divsion, that appears to be widening, between "Sailors of the Merchant Marine", and the Military Officer "Warrior" minded.

lgottiebbds, I could be wrong....but that is my opinion today.

The struggle between the miltary side and the merchant mariner side is as old as the academy itself. However each of these gdaduates are commissioned as officers in the Navy reserve and so a certain amount of military training should be expected. I am amazed at how many candidates come to this academy with no clue as to what they are getting into. I've said before that a couple of years ago a young lady showed up on Indoc day, looked around and exclaimed "Oh, they wear uniforms here??!!"

............ I've said before that a couple of years ago a young lady showed up on Indoc day, looked around and exclaimed "Oh, they wear uniforms here??!!"

Hopefully, she was not a Plebe Candidate (P/C) ?!?!

I cannot understand why these young men and women come to KP if they are indifferent/hostile to the regiment or if they have no understanding of or appreciation for academy history and traditions.

With going through the process of applying and getting a nomination, it's not possible that they don't understand that the academy is not just a regular college.

And if they are indifferent or hostile to the regiment or they don't appreciate or honor the traditions and history of the academy, then the sooner they are disenrolled, the better!

If these young people are at KP for "free" tuition and room and board and nothing else, then they don't belong there.

I honestly do not understand how these individuals can think they can just ignore their responsibilities to the regiment and their classmates and not face consequences.

Apparently the consequences have not yet gotten their attention. The members of the class of 2013 who haven't gotten with the program need to have the 2009 version of having the "tar beaten out of them".

Or maybe they just need to get gone. Then the rest of the class can get on with it.
