So...we got our first letter from our Plebe yesterday, addressed to her best friend who is living with us. (Her BF parents are a mess so she is staying with us until she starts her freshmen year at Maryville University here in St. Louis)

Knowing the time crunch, I am assuming this was "the letter" for now? Would it be at all possible there is another? Yes, I am a bit put off if this is the case, but after 18 years of this I know not to take it personally. Actually, might be good news - she must feel good about it because she would for sure let me know if she was not happy! Girls are like that.

I hope the other Plebe parents here got a letter and enjoyed it!

Why are you put off by it? Not to sound callous but the plebes are there to learn as much as they can in a very short period of time, not to sit around writing letters home to family and friends. We received two very short, one paragraph letters from our son and are thankful for them but also know he has very little time to be writing. personally I'd rather he spend the time catching up on his sleep. Parent's weekend will be here soon enough and will provide more than ample time to "catch up".

I don't think the OP is put off by the one letter itself. If I read this correctly, the OP sounds a bit putoff that the letter was addressed to DD's best friend. Honestly, I could completely understand that but have no fear OP, I doubt it is the last letter. If it was, you're going to have a great time catching up on all the stories when you see your Plebe for the first time since I-Day.

Rossi, I didn't explain myself well. I was sort of being funny - like "Ha, ha, the friend getts the letter not the parents." And after the last two days of knowing she was sick, I'm just happy she is feeling better.

Could be that "your" letter hasn't yet arrived -- the USPS can be a bit inconsistent with deliver. I don't recall any "lower limit" on the number of letters you were allowed to write. Rather, we had so little time to write that there were certain periods where you were "required" to write a letter "home." However, what you wrote and to whom you wrote it was entirely up to you, provided you put a stamp on something.

It may be that, since you'll get a call this WE, she wanted to send a letter to her friend whom she won't have a chance to talk to until PPW.

And very glad that she's on the mend!:thumb:

What usna1985 said. Some Plebes write hardly any letters, others will write several. What order the letters are mailed and when they might arrive is inconsistent at best. Feeling for you--so hard to have no contact--1/3 done!

Parents, don't forget to write your plebe! My father wrote me every single day that I was at USNA. Everything from what was going on at home and the neighborhood to his life in WWII to words of encouragement. I will never forget the comfort of knowing that I would always have a letter from him in my mailbox no matter what. Meant the world to me.

    Got more letters

USNA1985 was right! We got two letters yesterday.

One was written on July 3, and she was great.

The next, this Plebe has had a rough start. July 4th they were doing that thing (there's a name for it) racing to make your rack. She collided with a football player and he won that deal. She stuck out out until it swelled and bruised. She was in a brace and on crutches. I didn't know this when I got the call from them earlier that day so I didn't know to ask.

She said the food is good. (So adult, but still such a kid.)

For the call tomorrow, I plan on listening, encouraging and giving love.

If anyone has some specific advice for this situation, I am all ears (or eyes in this case.)

Are you on the Facebook parents group? You may get some excellent guidance there. Hope she's all better and enjoying some of it

2018 mid moms and dads. You request to join then send a message with a pic of appointment letter, pic with plebe or some other proof. It's a closed group.

There are several FB groups--a 2018 group is great because you are with other Plebe parents. There are individual company groups, but they don't tend to be as active. The USNA Parent Community group is more of the "official" academy group but is closely monitored and negative comments will be deleted, etc. (like the list serve).

The FB group USNA MID MOMS!!! (and DADS!) includes current parents, parents of grads, sponsors, grandparents, etc. This one is more real/authentic as people are free to express their views--which can also mean you might not agree with those views. But you can also get information from seasoned parents if you need it and get a heads up about what upperclassmen are up to. Furthermore, parents in this group are good about being honest that the Academy can be a rough place to be. There are currently a couple of "1st PS letters sent home" posted--funny to read now, but heartbreaking for the parent who got them at the time. It was a good warning to current parents of what could happen and not to panic.

Cajost--Good luck with your phone call today--hope it's a good one and your mid is feeling better--rough start for sure (and they're called rack races).

    usna1985,

Can't agree more. We had a family friend (friend of DS), who graduated from USNA. He truly appreciated the letters. Also, have another who is there now and one at WP. It is amazing to watch and see how they grow, into great people.
