Plebe privileges

OK, folks...tell me that the day your DS or DD set foot on the campus at Kings Point was the first time they ever heard jokes about being in band. Really? Chill out band parents and be proud of your band DS/DD. From what I can tell most band company mids do quite well and "enjoy" many and varied activities during their years at KP. As the parent of a grad and soccer player I can assure you that the midshipman band is a proud and respected part of Kings Point tradition. The mids might not admit it, but most/all understand and respect the time and talent that goes into being in the band. Even if they find it a non-intercollegiate sport to make jokes.
DH and I were both band geeks back in the day. DS is Band Company and while the band schedule gets him down sometimes, he wouldn't change to a different company if he had the chance. As for other activities, when he was a plebe he couldn't fit power squadron into his schedule - but he could manage cross country and track and field (he shares a school record with three other team mates for the distance medley:cool:).

KP has a band? I remember a bunch of midshipman carrying shiny things in formation and some guys wearing fake leopard skins while pretending to play the drums and if I really strain myself I recall something vaguely resembling music being played. Are you telling me that was the "band"?

I also recall teasing the band practically being an intramural sport 

I didn't realize talking smack about the Band was optional to non Band Company members. . . . .

In all honesty, we didn't call memembers of the bad, "Geeks". They were always band "Jocks". Less derogetory; I don't know. It does seem to lend an air of athleticism; of course that may be the point.

As Kram1 stated, there is a strange subculture at KP that many outsiders, including parents, may not fully understand. It is easily misunderstood in places like Internet bulletin boards, too.

It seems to me each group or varsity team/ activity has it's own perks. I have to admit looking at all the cool waterfront photos is hard to do if you have a kid who really wants to be doing that instead of ____________, since_________ hasn't really started yet. In my DS's case it is swimming. I know over the winter the swim team takes a "training" trip to For Lauderdale. That will be a great break for them. I understand Band Co. Also has off campus excursions throughput the year. What other cool opportunities do other groups have? Might be fun to remember when the waterfront dudes and dudettes appear to have the best deal going. I do not want feel sorry for the kid but boy but I kinda do a little  he went in wanting to sail and hoping he could even just a little without being all waterfront. It seemed to end up an either/or situation. bummer.

In the fall season of my Plebe year, I was on the sailing team. When Spring rolled around, I ended up in the Rugby Club (not a varsity team at the time for many various reasons) and that is where I stayed for the rest my time at school.

There are other perks like the Fine Arts Club. We would organize team movements for various concerts and were often able to get transportation.

Outdoorsman Club was another one. Our Memorial Day Weekend canoe trips down the Delaware became the stuff of legend in our own minds. We were able to get some transportation assistance and food. Too bad it didn't extend to the package store. We had to fund that ourselves.

Definately not the case- Come down one day ever, one day a week, or everyday- If a midshipmen wants to go sailing we will fit them in.
