Plebe Summer - Second Phone Call on Sunday July 25th

So far everyone soonds wonderful. Keep the updates coming. We are not there yet, but they are all sounding soo positive. YOU all are in my nightly prayers. God bless you all.

Call came at 1400 - almost exactly as before. Got in the whole 30 minutes.

Was in good spirits. Said it was "fun". They spent the time right before the call making up skits to roast the departing Detailers. Knows the new ones will put it to them pretty hard for the first couple of days at least.

Hasn't been able to get to all the stations yet. Too many BF days.

Has the hack.

Validated out of Calc 1 & 2, English plus Chem: she'll be taking physics instead. I guess that's a good thing.???

Enjoys her time in D&B.

Was put on duty during the parade competition as she hadn't been marching with her unit (D&B instead). Seems there were 3 others who couldn't march so the 4 took turns doing whatever they have to do during duty. She felt a little left out but we got a 2 page letter out of it.

They're going up to Camden Yards to see a ballgame.

She mentioned that we will get to see them do PEP on Sat morning of parents weekend. (I recall there was some question of that.) She can't understand why we'd want to but it seems we'll be able to.

Mentioned one had left already (first week) but the others who were considering it have decided to stay. (Too bad that fellow didn't think it through as there are plenty of kids who would have stepped in to take his place if he'd only decided a week earlier.)

Don't send anything - especially food; no time to eat it.

All in all a great call.

Got a great call that was cut off 7 minutes early due to storm, but we didn't care. DS sounded great and is off his SIQ status and was hobbling around on crutches in formation. Said he is back to going to chow with the rest of his platoon. He said he even managed to finish E course with the broken ankle and was excited to be back in his upper rack tonight. He said that he can't store all the power bars we are sending. Can't wait until PPW. Said we have to go to Chapel with him and all he wants to do is sleep. Yay! We are back in action!!!:shake:

I love reading all of these stories! I realize not everyone is have positive phone calls. Please share your experiences, good or bad, if you need support. When a letter arrived that was less positive, it helped to read others experiences that were both positive and negative. It helps to know that others are experiencing the same thing and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

lovethenavy--

GREAT news! So glad that your son is doing well and recovering. Sounds like he is back in the swing of things and that is good.

Will keep you all in my prayers daily as PPW approaches. I know that you can't wait.

Have a blessed day!

We had our call at about 3:25 yesterday and it was great. Lasted about 20 minutes before he called his gf...lol. At least he called us first! He said all was going well and has been playing lax, but the other players are REALLY GOOD, even though son made all-conf here in MD.
Thankful that he has a good platoon leader and gets along great with platoon; likes his roommates, although their new room is 1/3 the size of the first one. A bit nervous about the new detailers coming on-board today. Just told him to reset his expectations that it'll be tougher for a bit. Said the detailers ranked their platoon and he was in the top quartile, which was great to hear, esp since he's so humble and usually would never volunteer that info.
From what I've been told, part of the new detailers role is to integrate them into life as "part of the brigade"; how to get where you need to be; finding classes; what daily life will be like once the AC year starts; expectations, etc.
I also heard they get to sleep in until 1:00 on Sundays if they want to (although that doesn't sound right for some reason).

PPW is just 18 days away! :shake:

Could be that the intensity of their impromptu room inspection at 1:01 is dirctly proportional to the amount of time they slept.

DS was excited that they got to sleep until 7:30 yesterday....one mid told us at I DAY that every morning he wakes up at 5:15 and lays in his rack and says "please don't let it be 5:30" over and over again! :yllol:

We had a great phone call as well. DD seemed to be over most of the homesickness and recovering from shoulder strain. She is ready for the detailer change--she thinks!

I think she sees the light at the end of this tunnel. Hope she remembers it's not the only tunnel!

Plebes have "personal time" up until 1 PM on Sundays. While they can choose to sleep that whole time, most only "sleep in" until 7 or 8, then use the remaining time to try to go to church services, or to catch up on things.

False. That is academic year. Unless they made plebe summer much easier. And during the year, that sleep time is thoroughly utilized.

Yeah! I think if they go to Chapel. Laying around on Sunday morning may make you a target. Not sure? Change was at 12:00. How are the new Detailers (I mean Old Plebes) doing?

DS sounded great! Has the hack and ear infection but seems to be marching on! Can't wait for PPW, said the skits were hilarious and generally full of news about daily life/accomplishments. He's pretty closed mouthed about stuff so this was a welcome change. Hasn't got to sail yet because he was on duty the first time and there was no wind the second time. Will he still get an opportunity to sail? He was REALLY looking forward to sailing! What is the ranking within the Company/Platoon based on? Thanks for the input!

Hmmm, somehow missed this thread yesterday, but here goes.

First thing I noticed was DS had a slight cough and sounded stuffy. I was concerned because he wrote on the 15th that he was getting the hack and that was a long time ago. But, I asked right away how he was. His reply..."Actually, I'm pretty great!" Oh yeah!!!!

All positives this time, though he did express some concern over new detailers. Funny, it seems like yesterday I was writing to him that "these detailers won't be there forever..." Anway, he did say the old detailers were really giving them a rough time because it was their last day with them, but he didn't seem to mind. DS seems to be finding a method to the madness. He likes PEP, Drum and Bugle, Choir, E-course, weapons, and several other things that I couldn't hear because of the wind. He said he's been staying under the radar intentionally and has only been called out three times: twice for being a wallflower (I guess he really is staying under the radar because he definitely has never been a wallflower!) and once for laughing during an exercise in discipline...oops! He said he and his roommate were beside each other, and the squad had to use their personal time holding their heels 6 inches off the ground in flutter kick position because someone didn't sound off when they were supposed to. Suddenly he looked over at his roommate who had a funny look on his face like he was about to crack up, and he cracked up instead. Then they both couldn't stop laughing. Even though I know he shouldn't be laughing, it was good to hear that he CAN laugh through some of this!

I was touched that he told us not to worry that he wasn't trying really hard to use his leadership ability yet because he just wants to do well and get through Plebe Summer. Then, in the next breath, he told us he has been encouraging a couple of squad mates that are struggling... I think that shows leadership ability...just sayin'!

We talked for 15 minutes then passed him off to his brother who was waiting to hear from him on his Navy base. Later I found out that he also got to talk to his girlfriend for a few minutes. So, he used his time wisely.:thumb:

I'm so glad to hear that many of you got good calls, and especially that your son is doing well, LovetheNavy! Hang in there to those who have less-than-happy plebes. Only a couple more weeks until PPW!!! Positive thoughts and prayers for everyone as they adjust to the new Detailers!!

In this 2nd call my Son was so much more relaxed than in the 1st one. We could feel his old self-assurance coming through the phone. He knows he is only 1/2 way home through Plebe Summer, but he is quietly positive that he can make it.

What a difference two weeks can make!

We too had a very positive phone call (could hear the wind but must have been pre-storm) - everyone is asking how he's doing, can't say he's having "fun", but do think he's starting to figure it out. In one of his letters, he said that "it's a daily rollercoaster, up and down, but usually by the end of the day, he can look back and say that all-in-all it was a good day" - very insiteful for a young man (I was quite surprised to hear that from him). He said running is easier but push ups still "suck", he's very tall and thin. He said that the whole platoon sung "Build Me Up Buttercup" to their detailers in the push-up position in the p-way the other day - got lots of laughs and the thought of that certainly makes me smile:smile:

Yes, I'm lurking on this thread but wanted to add I got a letter from my son who's going through Basic at USAFA right now and he told me of his flight (AF version of a platoon) singing the same song, along with "I will survive" and "(I'll) Make a Man out of You!" Guess some things are the same everywhere!

July 25th call

After reading the threads.....I feel like I am the only parent that did not receive a great call. My plebe was still down, said he would not quit, but was not liking life at all. Plans on not making it in the sport he loves the most, has reinjured an old injury & seems disconnected from everything. Could not focus on the phone call & has told us absolutely nothing about what he has been doing. What are we to do?

read the thread about the first phone call - lots of advice about encouraging them and hanging in there
