During D's MOC interview the interviewer noticed that she had been to summer seminar and asked her about it. She said she loved it, and then he said- "good, then you've been through some of what you will go through during Plebe Summer." She responded with "well, I'm sure PS is much more intense". He then said "no, you pretty much got what you will go through. There isn't much difference".

Is that true? He was an NA grad but I wonder if he really knew about SS or if it maybe has changed since his days.

Anyone have any ideas about the comparison?

No. NASS is sugar-coated propaganda and is not even close to PS.

mdn18 thanks for the response but I have a question.

I gather from you signature line that you are also an applicant. If that is the case how do you know what Plebe Summer is really like compared to NASS?

I'm not saying you are wrong, and I just trying to find out what you are basing your response on and, if I should believe it versus someone who went through the process already.

When I went to NASS, I overheard the mids stating how dissimilar Plebe summer is compared to NASS. The closest thing we got to real PS was the "mock indoc" but even that was less intense than the real thing.

I've heard it called Summer "Scaminar" by current Mids who went through it.

Your instincts are correct. NASS is like a "Disney Ride" version of Plebe Summer. Even though intellectually the plebes who've done NASS tell themselves it is different, every year there were a lot who were in practice disappointed by just how different.

Similarities? It's hot, you're on the Yard, you get up pretty early in the morning and you're on the go.

Differences? Plebe summer is long enough for the two killer deprivations -- sleep and smartphone -- to hurt. People get sick. They get gimpy. The detailers aren't trying to convince you to apply -- they get tired and lose their patience and aren't making allowances for high school kids. NASS has the activities planned to keep the kids on the go, for the most part. Plebe summer has lots of standing with your feet hurting and sweat trickling down the small of your back, waiting for things you haven't been told about. The NASS "uniform" is basically matching casual wear -- it doesn't rule your life like a uniform that needs attention paid to brass and shoes and all the rest. NASS has tons of social life -- it's like sleep-away camp for the bonding. Plebe summer can feel very isolated at the beginning as it is hard to get to know your classmates as people. NASS you're not hungry, Plebe Summer you often are.

So, your daughter is a smart cookie. With that said, NASS is "military enough" that there are people who hate it and would hate life as a mid, so it is a good canary in the coal mine type test. But plebe summer takes you down and makes you dig deeper (to continue the mine analogy). It's a good sign that your daughter loved it -- but Plebe Summer ain't no NASS (I believe we had some funny cadences to that effect).

I tell my candidates, "If you loved NASS, you MAY like PS; if you didn't like NASS, you definitely won't like PS."

USNA has tinkered with NASS over the years. Initially, it was a mini-PS. However, it apparently scared away a lot of folks. So then they made it more like STEM and the result was that a lot of participants showed up at PS thinking it would be like NASS. Now they try to make it a mix -- some elements of PS and a lot of recruiting.

NASS is 5 days. PS is 6 weeks. Ac year is ~40 weeks. USNA is 4 years. Therein lies a huge difference.

No you are correct I'm just a 2nd time candidate so I'm sort of just relaying what I've heard/observed, but I know people at the Academy and I've been on the forum for long enough to hear about both.

DS stated food was much better at NASS!! Guessing that's the difference when feeding 700-800 vs 4400-4500!
