Would anyone be able to explain how weekends work during Plebe Summer? Are they any different from the weekdays or is there any yard liberty?

Thanks!

The only weekend liberty during PS is for parents weekend. You can attend religious services and generally speaking there is not as much "training" on Sunday. Three Sundays have time where Plebes get their phones and can call home.

Saturday's are like any other day of the week. Sunday generally you get 1 extra hour of sleep, church if you choose to attend and a little down time. Once lunch hits it turns back into a regular day Plebe Summer. First liberty won't be until Parent's Weekend.

Sundays are the best days of plebe summer. You get to sleep in until about 6:30, go to breakfast, and then groups break off for optional church. The rest of the morning is down time, so you can read and write letters, shine shoes, fold laundry, clean, or just relax (but definitely not sleep). At exactly 1200, everything goes back to normal until the next Sunday.

Thanks to all of you for the responses! I hadn't been able to find this information anywhere, so you were very helpful.

Just to "reassure" folks, things do get better during Ac Year, when plebes in good standing have town liberty on Saturday afternoon/evening and, if memory serves, Yard liberty on Sunday afternoons.

Probably a dumb question, but why can't you sleep?

Plebes don't rate naps during PS. There are plenty of "more worthwhile" activities you could be doing during that time -- learning rates, cleaning your room, spirit activities, writing letters home, etc.

Functioning efficiently while being sleep-deprived is part of the military skill set.

And unless things have changed, plebes don't rate sleeping between 0630 and 2200 during the academic year. I am not saying it doesn't happen, because there are some plebes who figure out creative places (and ways) to fall asleep, but if someone is caught, well there are normally consequences and it might not just be for that one person.

One of the great privileges of being an upper class -- weekday naps! :)

And '08, I thought plebes rated sleeping on WEs (during liberty hours) during Ac Year, although that may have changed since my days of long ago.

USNA1985, you are right...didn't scope my response to non-liberty times. The point being is that these rules last all plebe year and not just plebe summer.

My Plebe indicated that one of the rewards he got for pulling a 4.0 at the 6 week and 12 week grading periods was Rack Time -- meaning he could take a nap. Not sure if this is a Brigade wide rule or company specific. Other than that he could not take naps during the day even though he only had 1 class on Thursdays.

Fond memories of "combat naps" to get through a day after being on watch in the middle of the night. I can still do those and Navy showers. Sorry, Memory Lane diversion!

I remember under my bunk in basic with my hands hooked in the springs so I could tell the DI that I was tightening it. Also kept all latrine supplies in a bag at the bottom of my laundry bag. They never looked there or would stick their hands in. Locker was pristine as never an item used and all shinny and bright. First guy on fire watch in our barracks told us how to do it. I owe him a lot.
