Should cadet candidates shine their low quarters before R-Day? Or are cadet candidates supposed to leave them alone and only shine when instructed by cadre on R-Day?

EDIT: I also have a boot cleaning kit. Should I clean my boots before R-Day? Should I bring the cleaning kit with me to West Point or do I not need it?

    Thanks

I believe the new cadets will learn to shine their shoes the "right" way once they get to WP. I don't think it matters whether or not they shine/polish them beforehand, as it will need to be redone...and redone...and redone. :thumb:

There is no expectation that New Cadets arrive with shoes shined. Believe me, you will be given plenty of opportunities to shine your shoes with your squadmates during Beast. If you really want to put on a few layers, go ahead, but (just my opinion) don't spend too much of your last month of civilian-ness shining shoes when your foreseeable future will be full of it.

As for the boot cleaning kit, it's kind of the same deal. You do not have to clean your boots before R-Day (if they're caked in mud, though, it may be a good idea to brush them off). You can bring the kit if you want, but it is not required.

Just bring them as they were when you bought them (unless, like mom3boys pointed out, they somehow got caked in mud). If you were expected to bring shined shoes, they would have probably sent you instructional videos on it.
