What fun or interesting facts do you know about West Point?

With all of the crazy posts about admissions, I thought this would be a nice place to get away from it all

Patton's statue is in front of the library... Know why?

I think I know why... Didn't he have trouble at school? Or something along those lines?

I believe so. That is why his back is facing the library.

His excuse was always "I couldn't find the library!"

    Ah, you kids slay me.

Up until about 3 years ago when the new library was completed, Patton Statue stood where the new library now stands, facing the old library. The new library's location required that he be moved.

The joke was that he couldn't find the library, and hence he spent 5 years at West Point.

Remember that as monolithic and enduring as West Point is, it is anything but static. Much of the finery in that part of the campus is new or recently changed. Thayer Walk (the thoroughfare between the cadet area and the academic buildings) was built in 2000-2001. The Class of 65 plaza adjacent to the library was built in 2003. The honor monument was built in 2001-2002. Reconciliation Walk was built in 2004-2005. From 2001 through 2005, Arvin Gym barely existed. Only the boxing rooms, the 1962 room, Crandall Pool, and Hayes Gym existed. The rest was razed in 2001 and construction was delayed, so the 2003 completion date became 2005. Target Hill Field did not have a Rugby complex until 2006, and the Crew complex on the River Courts didn't exist until 2002.

Did you know that the Plain is the second most expensive lawn in the nation? Second to the White House lawn of course.

This is a question to any current Cadets: is it true that you are not allowed to use elevators? I heard that somewhere...

You see, stairs build you character. AND, as a bonus, leg muscles.

    So I've heard... Mmmmm!

On another note, did you know that the Battle Monument at Trophy Point is one of the single largest pieces of solid granite in the world?

Do you know how the chains were streched to reach both banks of the river?

How? Did they float them on logs or something?

And please, anyone comment on what you know... because in the not so distant future there may be a Firstie staring down at you expecting an answer. And you know what will happen if you don't answer? Here's a subtle hint: :rant2:

I believe this is an old corps thing, but allegedly, if you are in danger of failing your TEE, if you dress in full dress grays the night before the test and at the stroke of midnight spin the spurs on the Sedgwick statue, you must race the ghost of swedgick back to your room and if you win, you pass your TEE!

Yes, I heard of that one will!

I heard that the fact that they are disrespecting the check-in hours (or whatever they are called) are sometimes overlooked in sake of the tradition!

I think it would be pretty awkward if two guys showed up at the statue at the same time haha

What happens if you trip on the run back? haha.

Did you guys know that along with all of the honorable graduates and leaders of West Point, and not so honorable *cough Benedict Arnold cough*, two of them became President of the United States? They were Pres. Grant and Pres. Eisenhower.

Community, tell us what else you know!

I would love if someone recalled the story of someone carrying something on top of a tower in a few hours and it taking a few days to get it down...
