If there is a government shutdown, can the teachers still teach? Can the students stay on campus? Does anyone know what happened in the 90s during the last major government shutdown?

DS also called last night telling me the rumor was the teachers would be sent home and the academy closed. I gave him assurance that would not happen, I hope I was correct. In either event, they do not need the distraction.

While talking to DS last night after recognition he said that if the gov. shuts down all Mids will have to leave the campus... I told him to tell friends that can't get hom to hop on the bus with him and we will figure it out when they arrive! Just what they need......

I was a mid during the last one and frankly I don't remember missing anything. I know I didn't miss any meals and I'm pretty sure I didn't miss any classes.

seems to me that all the service academies would be affected, not just KP should there be a shut down

Civilian teachers are federal workers. Whether or not they remain on the job depends on if they are classified as "essential".
    http://money.cnn.com/2011/04/06/news/economy/federal_workers_shutdown/index.htm?hpt=T2

Keep in mind that if a Federal worker is furloughed due to the shutdown they MAY NOT work. At all. Including emails etc. It is in fact a Federal offense for them to work without getting paid.

My understanding is that the Military will remain on the job but will not be paid until the impasse is ended. Before you get all excited about missing that Cadet paycheck or ROTC stipend, think of all the military families who live paycheck to paycheck, are deloyed and will not be paid on time. This is unconscionable, IMO.

So far, all we have heard is rumors from our DS/DDs. Lets be careful not to spread unfounded rumors. Until we hear something official, I am assuming they will be at KP with business as usual.

Yes, there is a degree of uncertaintly. According to the link I posted - most government workers will not know if/how they are affected until Friday - perhaps some not even until they show up for work on Monday.
Good to take it one day at a time.........

The information void has not been good in DC, and with the void comes people inserting rumors, some seemingly factual.

It is the #1 thing being talked about in the hallways and lunch rooms...yesterday and today.

My favorite former mid having graduated in June I no longer have a dog in the fight other than knowing a few mids that are still at the Academy. My question is, "Why isn't there anything posted on the Academy website or the Parents Page?" Wouldn't this be a contingency that you would plan for in the last 2 -3 weeks? Has anyone on this forum contacted the Administration? Just some questions from a casual observer.
As an aside, the favorite former mid just showed up after 3 months at sea on a tanker slated for salvage in India. You know how sharp they look at graduation, well after three months at sea..... not so much. It is still great having them home. Best wishes to the Class of 2011 and all to follow.

No one has posted anything anywhere because no one knows anything. There has been no communication at any level of government, and some people just haven't received guidance. It's far bigger than a USMMA issue, so likely they need guidance to say anything....keeps working up the chain....

I know many Cadets that rely on their cadet paycheck to pay their bills/make ends meet. Don't think we just spend the money on booze and casino trips. While I'm not comparing cadet life to that of a deployed AD member, our paychecks are just as valuable to us as they are to the AD member and their family.

As of tonight here is what is known:
    http://www.armytimes.com/news/2011/04/military-government-shutdown-details-040711w/

All active duty military are to remain on active duty and report to duty. No military installations will be closing. Knowing this it does not make sense that the DOD academies will close and cadets/mids sent 'home'. In the eyes of the military the academy is there home.

Bull - sorry but I am not feeling the love. By law cadets do not have dependents. A cadet can certainly get by on their cadet pay. They will have a roof over their head and three (or two but adequate) meals per day. They will not be evicted.
If a cadet will miss a car payment, credit card payment or other financial obligation they should contact their creditor and explain the situation.

Active duty military families - esp young enlisted - often live paycheck to paycheck. They need each pay to pay the rent and buy groceries. Many have dependents for which they must also provide food and shelter

Some ROTC cadets use their stipend to pay their rent. Some are also in the Guard and risk losing their Guard pay. These cadets are not guaranteed food and shelter.

I definitely agree with you and am not making excuses for ROTC cadets, but once again, you'd be surprised to know that a good number of Cadets live paycheck to paycheck. They pay the same rent and buy the same groceries as everyone else. Don't think I'm arguing because I have a dog in the fight, because I really don't. I live in a nice dorm 30 yards from a nice dining facility with a nice meal plan paid for by your tax dollars, that I truly appreciate. However, there are lots of people, that somehow happen to be cadets (and most cadets live off campus) that rely on this pay, that could affect the next few weeks of their lives.

Ha! - when you wrote Cadets I thought you meant SA cadets/mids. My bad. Didn't realize you were ROTC.

I agree many ROTC cadets live paycheck to paycheck. They have rent to pay and groceries to buy as I noted.
We are - after all - on the same page.

Cadets and Mids at service academies will be well cared for.

The cadet pay discussion is not germane to this thread as USMMA cadets receive no pay so you are not likely to get any sympathy here. As for being worried because the government teet will be dry for a few weeks ... maybe you forget that that money came from someone who doesn't get to wave an american flag and somehow become exempt from economic reality. Many of us in the real world live paycheck to paycheck all the time. Many of us worry about car payments and mortgages and food for our children all the time. If you truly consider the military to be service and not just another government job, if you truly consider that in joining the military you are doing something for me then you will never forget that all that money and those fat benefits that you enjoy started with me working hard and paying my taxes. Never forget that you will be living in a bubble in which politics and not economics determines whether you get a raise or not unlike we who are "just" civilian.

back to the point of the thread ...

There was an article in the Washington Post yesterday that "excepted service" employees will be allowed to work at the discretion of their agencies. I know that at least some of the KP staff is excepted service, not sure about professors though.
