I know there are several contributors who have a bit of experience with moving locations in the military. My DD is planning to put her apartment furniture into a POD. She should know where she will be stationed by the time she moves out of her college apartment prior to going to BOLC. By using a POD approach, she will not need to return to her college town after BOLC to pack; she can just tell PODS where to bring her pod after she has permanent housing arranged. A few questions:
    1. Does the Army reimburse for actual moving costs or is there an allowance?
    2. Does anyone foresee a problem using the POD moving approach compared to conventional moving services?

HHG for Entry to Active Duty

    Mariner116,

My recommendation is to read some of the FAQ's and Brochures on Move.Mil
then call the closest Military Transportation Office -Army, Navy, or AF. Each service has their own name for the office responsible for outbound shipments but they each support all uniformed services.

They should be able to answer questions about entry to Active Duty from Home of Record versus school (PEAD). Ask about authorization for storage of HHG (household goods). If she knows her permanent duty station before departing school to BOLC it may be more cost effective to store the HHG at the first duty station.

Please keep us posted on results.

Here is another link from move.mil regarding personally procured move and Non Temporary Storage.

Yet another link regarding moving with the military. Check out page IV-K1-23 and 24. Personally Procured Move requires Transportation Office Approval.

I agree. I would also have her get renters insurance from USAA before she places it in storage.

I would also go the TMO path because by using them she also doesn't have to worry about it being considered a DITY (do it yourself).

I think in the end it would be financially better off by having the Army ship it and place in storage than using a POD.

One thing to understand is that the military depreciates everything very quickly....starting at 6 months old as the threshold, this is why she wants renters insurance. She also wants it because USAA will tell you it covers heat, water and rat damage.

Mariner, you mention that your DD thinks she will know her first duty station before she leaves school? Is this what she has been told. My DS seems to believe that he will not find out until he is at BOLC. He said that performance at BOLC weighs on your choice of duty station.

    Can anybody clarify this?

    Thanks

My DD expects to find out her first assignment (duty station?) before she commissions. I believe she told me that she is supposed to know 30 days before commissioning. For her this would be finding out by mid-May. DD also said that the assignments can change up until the moment they get travel orders coming out of BOLC. This is her impression and is no more valid or accurate than your DS's understanding. Others want to share their understanding/experience?

Also, thanks to Pima and AROTC parent for their insights and suggestions. We are definitely focusing on having the Army coordinate her move now.

    Assignment after BOLC

    jrhawk-

It may be branch dependent and whether they ADSO'd for duty station. AG BOLC is likely TDY because it is only 12 weeks long. IN/AR BOLC are likely a PCS because they are longer. Each branch handles the assignments processes slightly differently. IN BOLC is 17 Weeks and AR BOLC is 19 weeks according to ATTRS (https://www.atrrs.army.mil/atrrscc/course.aspx) but with follow on courses they are commonly over the 20 weeks for a PCS. The cadets I know that are Infantry knew the post of 1st assignment when they got their orders to BOLC, just not the unit. They may have ADSO'd for post though.

What branch is your son? If he's active duty AV all bets are off to know the follow on assignment before departure. There are too many variables.

    Good Luck

Not all branches do assignments the same way. For instance, Field Artillery LTs don't find out their duty station until they're in BOLC.

My DS is AD MI. He is scheduled for BOLC at Ft Huachuca on July 1. It sounds like MI BOLC is 16 weeks. His 1st couple of choices for his assignment our in the DC area, so I am just trying to get a handle on how this all works. He has been in a dorm for 4 years so he doesn't have much to move home. More worried about getting stuff to his first duty station.

My DS is infantry and did not find out his duty assignment or post until he was at IBOLC. Interesting enough, he was initially told that he would go to Fort Drum and then a week later was informed he got his ADSO to Vicenza.
