When do the plebes actually unite with their parents at PPW? Trying to decide when to fly in from California. PPW is August 11, Thursday - August 14 - Sunday.

Thanks!

Two years ago I think we got to see them Friday morning after a parade.

If you search these forums in the late spring, early summer postings, someone will have posted the schedule for last year or the year before.

I recommend that you be present for noon meal formation on Friday of PPW. IOW, be on the Yard by noon Friday. Even though formation is "just a lot of Midshipmen lining up," seeing it that first time is a pretty special occasion. Also suggest that you take a camera, and tissues if you are at all inclined to need them.

Plebes are usually released for their first Town Liberty immediately at the conclusion of the formation.

If you have time/money to do so, you can arrive earlier and go on tours of the academic buildings, or see displays about the different academic departments. However, you can NOT make contact with your Plebe prior to their official start of Town Liberty. In fact, if you are on the Yard and spot your Waldo prior to start of liberty, I strongly urge you to do an "about face" to avoid any possibility of contact that not only could, but WOULD get him/her into trouble.

If you can swing it, arrive on Thursday. It will give you some time to get yourself settled, explore the Yard or the town and of course, visit the MID store which you Plebe may or may not want to do once he or she is set free.

Last year they were released after the parade on Friday morning. We went on Thursday to see them form up for dinner formation, but due to a thunder storm, it was cancelled, so we only got to see one or two Companies

MID Store on Thursday is a definite positive. Your MID will want to leave as soon as possible on Friday and will not want to browse the MID Store with parents. Just wait until you are at a resteraunt with your PLEBE and a Company officer is there with his/her family at the next table. Enjoyment wasn't the word for the night out.:shake:

Based on last year:

Thursday: Usual schedule of yard tours, academic department displays in Dahlgren, Thornton Studios plebe summer photos in Dahlgren also, mid store shopping, Dry Dock, evening meal formation (weather permitting) on Tecumseh Court. No contact with your Plebe, but you may catch a glimpse during formation. Per 2012mom, DO NOT try to get your Plebe's attention until they are released for Liberty. There is a story from PPW 2009 where family made contact with Plebe on Friday morning at some point prior to release and Plebe was not allowed out of Bancroft for all of PPW.

Friday: Buildings open for tours in the morning. We visited flight and ship simulators. Plebes form up and are released to Liberty at 12:15. Family members wait along Stribling Walk next to the letters of last name for Plebe to join them. Lunch at King Hall for those whose purchased tickets beforehand. Plebe's family allowed to visit Plebe's room in Bancroft directly after they are released for Liberty. This will be the only time you will be able to see your Mid's room until 2/C Parent Weekend. Plebes have Town Liberty until 2200 (10:00 pm).

Saturday: parade at Worden field weather permitting. Plebes released for Town Liberty at about 10:30. Liberty expires at 2400 (midnight).

Sunday: Plebes released for Liberty at 0800, must be back at Bancroft for evening meal formation at 1800 (6:00 pm). They really, really need to be back by 5:30 to make sure that they have memorized chow calls for that night and uniforms are up to snuff for inspection.

Cell phones are returned to Plebes for PPW.

town liberty?

What exactly does "town liberty" mean? Are they restricted how far or where they can go? Is Washington D.C. too far?

I think DC is now within the new limits?? Don't know if it applys to PPW.

This is a completely different Supe and Dant than in previous years, so it's hard to say what the distance limit will be for PPW. Last year, the entire DC-Baltimore-Annapolis area was allowed, but for Class of 2012, we had a 25 mile radius.

Other activities might be available to you as well depending on your Plebe's involvement in activities. For example, we got to see our Plebe practice with the Drum and Bugle Corps early Saturday morning. Also, don't forget to go look at the pics of your Plebe taken by Thornton Studios during Plebe Summer. You can see full-size, color pics without any copyright marks. It makes it much easier to decide if/what you will order. I took a list of numbers for the photos I wanted to see specifically because even the "My Waldo" box was too full to sit and look at all of them.

Don't get too carried away making plans for sightseeing or the like. Your plebe will likely just want to get away, eat large amounts of food, sleep and sit around in shorts with those s/he loves and, more importantly, those who love him/her.
