And from my family also

I am a regular lurker.

I have two sons who are freshmen at Va tech. (triplet sister went elsewere)

One is in the Corps of Cadets, NROTC. The other is living the life of a regular college student. They both are locked in their dorms. The one in the Corps has to stay in his room. They are suppose to be studying for finals which is kind of hard to do with the tension on campus.

Yes, let keep the victim's families in our prayers.

We are standby right now. Our last text was our DD has SWAT escorting them out. 3:30 p.m.

She was in Torgersen Hall when this occurred..

Waiting with baited breath. Her phone is on it's last bar. She is shutting it down to reserve the battery.

1 hr from her last text,

Baking, cooking, doing everything to believe that silence is golden.

Junior daughter is safe in her apartment...many wild rumors of multiple shooters and more gunshots have been dispelled by university official (thank goodness)! Prayers for the families of the deceased, the VT Police, the Hokie Nation, and the Blacksburg community. Another tragic event in an incredibly awesome community.

Son is the Corps, he was safely locked down in his dorm. Have to say, I'm impressed with how VT and especially the Corps handled things this afternoon.

All of our thoughts are with the VT students and their families right now. Thanks for the updates, Pima. God Bless everyone.

Just a note…..our son has considered VT and entering the VTCCC next year. Having visited a couple of times, we as a family have been very impressed with VT as a school and their Corps of Cadets. Everyone at VT has been so helpful even though they know VT is currently my son’s number two choice. As someone that carries a gun and a badge for a living I am very saddened by today’s events. However, I am glad to hear the kids are safe. Our family is certainly lifting up the VT family in prayer.

Glad to hear everyone's DD/DS is safe. It seems like the second/unknown victim was the shooter. Not clear if it was a suicide or was brought down by someone else at this point.

Giving thanks to go God for the safety of everyone's sons and daughters. Let this never happen again at VT. (it is beginning to feel like a reccuring nightmare) Hope you all get to hug your kids real tight as soon as possible!

The "Officer Down Memorial " page listed the victim patrolman as being shot in the head while sitting in his patrol car while on a simple traffic stop. He was approached from the side or from behind by an individual not involved in the stop. The suspect then killed himself 45 minutes later in a parking lot on campus I believe. The officer was 39 years old and leaves a wife and 5 children. My prayers are with the family of Officer Deriek Crouse.

We received this letter in our inbox this morning as a parent of a Hokie 14.

Dear Colleagues,

It is with a deep - and regrettably familiar - sense of sadness that I
write to you. Once again, the campus and the community we love so well
have been visited by senseless violence and tragic loss. Tragedy again
struck Virginia Tech in a wanton act of violence when our police
officer, Deriek Crouse, was murdered during a routine traffic stop. My
heart goes out to his family who will surely feel most keenly, in the
days and months and years ahead, the profound loss that today's events
have brought to pass. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences
to his family and to his colleagues in the police department.

But my heart goes out also to all of you, members of a strong and
tightly-knit community that has had the sad misfortune to have
weathered these storms before. I have been, and will continue to be,
proud of how you have risen to the occasion time and time again,
growing stronger in your bond and in your loyalty to one another and
to the Hokie Nation.

We must also acknowledge that the bond we feel most strongly in these
times is borne of sorrow, and that sorrow demands that we turn to one
another for solace. I encourage you to seek out consolation in the
company of your fellow Hokies, those who understand how these events,
tragic though they are, shape us into better people.

The Virginia Tech community is admirably served by its outstanding
police department. Now, one who had sworn to serve and protect us has
fallen, and we can pay no greater tribute than to pledge to serve and
protect one another, as the spirit of Ut Prosim calls us to do.

Sincerely and with deepest sorrow,

Charles W. Steger
President

For parents that have fears about sending your child there because this was the 2nd shooting, don't be afraid. I have a DD there and this morning, after she was escorted out of the buildings last night, she is even more determined to remain a Hokie.

Bullet and I have our 3rd child going through the college application process right now, and have done multiple campus visits. I will say that because VT on their tours highlight their security implemented after the 2007 shootings IMPO is much safer and tighter than the other campuses. I paid attention to that, and at VT every few hundred feet they have emergency response poles. They have police all over the campus be it on bikes or in cars.

Their key card access to dorms are one of the best. Not only do you need it to get in the building, but to make elevators work.

I agree with PIMA, My sister went to VT. It is an outstanding school with really wonderful people. Bad things can happen anywhere at anytime. Do not let this tradgedy affect any choices you make. My memory of the school when my sister went there was the great friendliness of the people on and around campus. It was dramtically different from the NY metro area where I grew up. She also leveraged her education to a very successful career.

My family and I send our condolences to the family of the slain police officer and veteran.
