Prep school questions

I have the same ACT scores that Augustus has except for reading, which is like a 25 for me. My GPA currently is a 3.6. Will I have more "points" due to my athletics? 5x national champion, 3x national team member, and 2x national record holder? Sorry if others have already read my previous posts about this but I am wanting to get this answered. I feel that prep school will be an option and I am totally fine with that. The coach said that prep school is likely due to my test scores, which I am frantically trying to pull up! Good luck to all!

Call me and maybe I can help explain the difference between the USAFA Prep School, the Falcon Foundation Prep schools/program, and the generic civilian academy prep schools for "free agents".

USAFA questions

I am a high school senior and i just sent my requests for nomination to my state senators and congressmen. I hope for a direct appointment to the USAFA but if not i would GLADLY go to the Prep School.
here are my stats-

HS gpa-3.4
ACT: English-26
Math-19
Science-27
Reading-26

I am the captain of a club soccer team and have played on that team for 9 years. I also have played on my high school's team all 4 years. Jv fresh&soph and Varsity junior & senior year. I am in the National Spanish honor society, Spanish club, E-6 (a catholic youth group for young men), I am very involved in scouts, Eagle Scout, i work during the summer as a landscaper and lawn care taker, i also volunteer at a soup kitchen once a week in the summer. I am in the student government and on the campus ministry team.

What do you think my chances are? thanks

As far as your extra-curricular and leadership activities go, I would say that you are good. As for your GPA and certain sub-scores, I highly suggest you raise them or there is a potential that you might not even be deemed a competitive candidate. I do not know how your DoDMerb or CFA is , but just try your best to max your CFA and make sure your physical is qualified! This post is really just my view of your resume compared to that of others I have seen and their results. One can never truly say how one candidate will compare to another, because admissions look at the WHOLE person and not just certain strengths or weaknesses. But one thing is for sure, and that is that this is likely to be the hardest admissions years in USAFA history! Good Luck

So, WKSLP said some stuff about this, but I figured I'd throw down on this, as you're looking at USAFA and all. Your extra-curricular activities look good. I know 2 eagle scouts in my squad alone. Community service is big here (CSL) and work experience is very good too. I'm assuming you lettered in Varsity Soccer as well as playing for the Varsity squad, and the Captain's position for your other team is good for showing leadership. A 3.4 isnt bad, GPAs really depend on how the academy views the difficulty of the courses you took, and the high school you attended. The biggest thing is test scores. You're going to want high 20s low 30s if you want a shot at being competitive. The Academy is first and foremost an engineering school, so they look very hard at Math Classes, and Math test scores. Try the SAT and see if you are better at that as well, most people do better on one of the standardized tests than the others. (Mine was the ACT).

I'm sure you can find a former preppie to ask about the USAFA Prep School. I was an NWPer (c/o 2010) and there are 3 kids in my squad who went to other preps on Falcon Scholarships (1 NMMI and 2 Valley Forge). I would be happy to answer any NWP questions you have or ask them about other preps if you are interested in going that route. Hope this helps.

Good luck!

I was 3Q'd this past year but did not have a nom, so I am self prepping at Northwestern Prep (the premiere Fifth year prep school for academy bound students). Unfortunately I was over qualified to receive scholarship, but the academy still looks more favorably on prep schools versus other colleges when it comes to reapplication, so that is why I chose to attend! Even with scholarships, a prepster still has to pay about half tuition at every Prep School except for the SA Prep Schools. Unfortunately the use of the SA prep schools has been cut back to pretty much recruited athletes and prior enlisted candidates (with a few exceptions). So keep trying your best to beef up your Academics and hopefully something will work out for the both of us! Good luck!
I have to say I wondered about who could get an appointment to the Prep school myself when my DS was in your position. However, now I have to beg to differ with you. MY DS is at the USAFA Prep School this year. She is not a recruited athlete or active duty. And with her there are plenty of fellow c/c's that were neither. I am not sure what the numbers are exactly. You can probably find out more on the prep website. What do I think they are looking for?Sure it helps to stand out in Athletics but if you can't you will have to find another way to stand out. Be active, show them what you got (time management, leadership, awards/honors, whatever you can get your hands on)!! Work hard and be dedicated to what you get into. Try to get nominations even if you don't have everything to qualify for the USAFA. Our congressman's board decided they weren't as worried about the SAT score as they were impressed with her resume. USAFA Prep School was the best thing that ever happened to my DS. She totally loves it and hopes to get an appointment to the USAFA next year.

For Prep School your chances are not bad at all. For Academy probably not competitive enough, scores and GPA are pretty high for their nomination. I would say you are about in the same boat my DS was last year, her GPA was slightly higher at 3.6 but her SATs were in the mid 500's. She was very active in school like you are and showed dedication by being in the band 7 yrs (your soccer). You probably want to bring up that Math score or try the SAT. Apply for all the nominations even if you know your scores may not qualify. DS got a nomination which probably helped. The congress man's board decided that the rest of her resume far out-shone the not perfect SAT. DS was very active in HS (too much to mention here). Nomination is not required for Prep School but it looks good. Keep up the hard work. You will get there.

Been reading this thread. Great to see all of you interested in prep schools. Though my screen name may not suggest it, I'm actually a sponsored USAFA prep at NMMI. This school is everything you need in a prep school, in my opinon. Academics kick my butt, the Prep PT program is tough but doable, and you meet some pretty awesome people. As long as you can stomach the Army hoooo-ah of the place, I recommend it. Just so you know what USAFA looks for in a sponsored prep, here are my stats(or these were when I received the scholarship).

ACT- 29
SAT- 1270
GPA in HS- 3.6
3 AP classes(my school only offered 5)
4 year soccer player, capt on both JV and Varsity. All-Empire, All-League
4 year track&field, capt JR and SR years
I was in a couple clubs, but VP and president of the Interact club.
Held a part time job from Soph-Jr year
Student council, referee, bunch of other things.

As you can see, I'm pretty sure I got the scholarship because I had such strong extracurriculars and OK grades and test scores. For me, I know my CFA wasn't fantastic when I applied last year and was even asked to take it twice. but PT helps that. Lots and lots of it.
Even if you don't get sponsored though, I've got friends here at NMMI who are self-preps and some of the most driven people I've ever met. If you want it bad enough, you can get it.

Hope this helped some of you! Go NMMI.

Hey just asking the initial question here. Most of the people who do attend the Prep School are in fact recruited atheletes (60%). Then of course is the prior enlisted spots (around 30 or 40 slots). Then usually are the minorities/other candidates that didnt receive a slot to the Academy due to academics, but the board see's potential in them. Or at least thats how it was last year when I was a preppie. Good Luck.

I asked DD who is in USAFA Prep this year. And it is true that athletes, priors, and minorities hold the vast majority of slots. However, DD is non-minority, non-recruited athlete, and non-prior and received a spot. She said she estimates probably about 10% of the preppies are non recruited athletes or priors. So not easy but it can be done. Make sure you stand out with something. You can also overqualify yourself for prep school however. They are looking for people they can help improve. So if your academics are shining and your SAT/ACT is enough to qualify you probably won't be a candidate for Prep school.
