I have a few questions about USAFA Prep School. I have tried to look it up before, but can never find what I'm looking for.

How many students are usually admitted to Prep School?
How many of those students are granted an Appointment to USAFA after reapplying the next year?
When reapplying, do students need to apply for nominations from their home state or from Colorado?
Are Prep School students involved in any way with the USAFA Cadets?

If someone could answer my questions, I would be very grateful!
    Thank you!

    1) I sure its around 250
    2) Most are offered appointments the only reason you would not is because they messed up
    3) Nominations from home state
    4) From what I heard not normally its considered fraternization

Im also a 2017 candidate this is just information I have gathered. Someone like Pima or Christ Corp will tell you more details. Just go on google and search "serivce academy fourms prep school" you will find stuff. And good luck!! :thumb:

    1. About 50 of the Prep School slots are Prior Service (Enlisted). Leaving about 200~ slots that end up going to a ton of Intercollegiate Athletes and whatever is left go to other sources.
    2. Like Alpine said, and what I have been told from Admissions staff themselves is the only way to not get an appointment is if you mess up.
    3. Home State.
    4. Preppies have little to no contact with Cadets on the hill apart from their BMT cadre. From what I have learned and saw when I was on my LEAD DVP tdy to the Academy, the Prep School is like it's own little world.
Couple of Preppies (LFry, AFrpaso) are on this site and are very helpful regarding questions about the prep (up-to-date information at the very best as well).
And to add onto this little convo, especially for any Priors reading this, a great deal of Priors end up going to the Prep School just because most of us have been out of school for 1-3 years, and because some of the slots at the Academy for Direct Priors get filled by Prior Preppies.

How many students are usually admitted to Prep School?
    Right around 250

How many of those students are granted an Appointment to USAFA after reapplying the next year?
They try to find slots for everyone as long as you work hard and show that you want it. I think they usually admit right around 180.

When reapplying, do students need to apply for nominations from their home state or from Colorado?
Every student is required to reapply for nominations from their home state.

Are Prep School students involved in any way with the USAFA Cadets?
The Prep School is separated from the Academy, and any correspondence between cadets and cadet candidates can be considered fraternization.
To expand on this subject: there will be times when you will run into cadets. It's unavoidable at football games, major's night, and other events. Saying "hey" to a cadet isn't going to get you in trouble, but you really can't become buds with a cadet. If you have a friend at the Academy then you would be required to document your relationship, and then you could speak to them without "fraternizing."

Awesome, thank you all so much!
I'm hoping that I'll get an appointment, but Prep School would be just as good in my eyes!

Do you know when we may find out about Prep School? Currently my portal says between April and May, but it also says that we will have a definite yes or no about the Academy by April 15th.
Would they notify me if I don't get an appointment and later offer Prep School, or would I know about Prep School the same time as I know about the Academy?

I did notice that admissions is giving more direct appointment slots to Airmen this year though. I think the class of 2016 only had 1 direct appointee?

Keep in mind that the Prep Schools numbers have historically shrank as the year progresses. We started with around 250 this year and now we're around 190.

If you pass the PFT, maintain a decent MPA and GPA above 2.5 and graduate, then you are pretty much guaranteed an appointment.

The only piece of the admission process that you need to complete is applying for the nominations from all available sources. This year, even the prior service had to do this. However, we were told that if we are applied to all sources and are turned down, we can still receive an appointment.

and yes, the class of 2016 had only one direct prior service appointment.

My escort was a Prior service direct, but someone else on my DVP trip said their escort (also Freshman) was also a direct. Might there have been more but admissions never said anything?
And to House, I have seen QUITE a bit of direct entries which is surprising, gives me slight hope to get in direct, but it all depends on the stars aligning for me (Have 1 subscore on my ACT that is borderline DQ'ing, yet there is not a establish minimum posted anywhere) but everything else is in the average range.

Some of the cadet candidates are taking classes at the AFA this semester. There obviously is some interaction between those C/C and the cadets.

The preppies were told that they would know about their appointments by the Prep school graduation around May 20th.

Thanks for that. For some reason I had not given that much thought. I look forward to being a preppie if not a direct this year. I still have two weeks of hope left for direct entry.

Hang in there. My son's notification for the Prep school came four weeks before prep school started.

Until you get a denial, you're still in the game.

My son is prior service so out processing can take a little extra time but the military can and will make it happen if needed. :yllol:

Now we need to see the current Prep school attendees get their appointments. Should be sooner than May 20th, if acceptances and denials are about done.
